$100 Or Best Offer! 1973 Olds Omega

There isn’t much you can buy with $100 when it comes to motor vehicles. Sure, you could buy a wreck, or a previously harvested parts car – but sometimes, even those exceed $100. Well, out in San Francisco you can buy a complete Oldsmobile Omega for $100, or best offer! You’ll find it here on craigslist, where it will obviously need some work and doesn’t currently drive. But it’s just $100!

Now, certainly, you’re not going to get a super desirable car for $100. But as it stands, this Omega appears to be mostly stock and sporting a decent body with old-school California blue plates still attached and what appears to be a vintage dealer plate frame. I have no idea what “Paso Robles” means, but maybe a reader in the Bay Area can clue us in.

All four hubcaps are present and the chrome appears decent. The beltline trim hasn’t gone astray and all the glass is accounted for. Unless the seller knows that the engine is past the point of reasonable repair, I’m not sure there’s any real risk here. From what I’ve read, San Francisco is fairly stringent on removing dead cars from street parking areas, so maybe $100 in his pocket is better than the seller losing his vehicle and paying fines due to impoundment.

While I would never think of an Olds Omega as an investment vehicle, if a weekend of repairs and some time spent with an orbital buffer would bring this example back to life, there could be $500 of profit in it for the next owner. Or, perhaps you could just enjoy this economy sedan with its excellent 70s paint job and plenty of room for your friends, dogs or groceries. Anyone nearby plan to check it out?

I’ve got a nice low miles 455 Olds motor and Turbo 400 taking up pace in the shop… This would make the perfect sleeper car, but by the time I had it shipped 1800 mi to my house I could buy a local car…

The cat converter would bring $100 in scrap. The entire car would bring $300+. Note the lack of rust. Lots of usable looking parts if you were to part it out. Better yet, buy it, get it running, buff it, and keep a fun old car on the road. For one quarter of an average monthly car payment you could have a ball. I can’t see a down side to this one.

      No cat. Not until 1975.

Santa Cruz(license plate surround) is 70 miles south of S.F. PasoRobles is another 100 or so miles south of Santa Cruz. Took a trip? (last one I’ll bet) More expensive to bring it home than leaving it where it died.

I still feel that the Omega grille treatment looks sportier than same year Pontiac Ventura,Buick Apollo, and even Chevy Nova. The government crash standards forced automakers into making those infamous 5-mile-an-hour bumpers that year.A lot of cars thusly had front bumpers become oversized, ugly appendages in ’73.

If I had the money and space, well, the space more than the money, I would have one each 4 door base model of each of the NOVA cars except the Nova itself, which I find boring.

If it were local and I had a garage to spare, for $100 I would go for it even if it was not running. On second thought, that would apply only if I could use a tow cable and had a friend to steer it home for me. But being mechanically not inclined, I would just keep it for a few years until it’s value went up. Or am I just kidding myself?
