Black Plate Barn Find: 1968 Buick Riviera

I’ve always liked the looks of the Buick Riviera, especially first and second generation cars. And amazingly, you can get into one of these beautiful Buicks without breaking the bank. Given the looks, comfort and performance these cars offer, I’m actually surprised they aren’t more valuable. This particular example was found in a barn in California and was still wearing it’s black plates. It was last on the road in 1995, but has been gone through recently to make it a driver. With bidding at just $1,300 and no reserve, this could be a fantastic way to get into a classic car! Find it here on eBay in Anderson, California.

This car was said to have resided in Red Bluff, California, an area that is said to quite dry and hot. That should mean it’s completely rust free, but a closer look reveals some rust issues that will need to be addressed. That’s alright though, if you can get it cheap enough, it would be worth fixing the issues well enough to make it a decent driver.

It’s also going to need an interior. The seller didn’t post any inside shots in the eBay listing, but they have more photos of it on their own website. You can view them here. As you can see though, the interior is in rough shape and will need to be fully restored or completely replaced. I haven’t looked to see what an interior will cost, but hopefully they aren’t unreasonably expensive.

While it isn’t perfect, there are a lot of options for this car. For the right price, you have the option of restoring it, simply making it a daily driver or even turning it into a luxury muscle car. The 430 V8 already offers decent power, but I’m sure you could message even more power out of it. I’ll admit, I’m a bit torn on what I would do with it. So, I’d love to hear what you would do with this Buick!

I think that’s going to go for a lot more than some of us would guess.

Like it alot. Agree it will go for more $…$4000 to $6000. Straight body, iffy trunk. Lipstick red leather with white door panels OR all black leather OR tan leather.

Potential to be a very sharp car.

Grandma pulled tree stumps on Saturday and drove it to church on Sunday.

Replace the interior, detail the engine and buff the paint and hit the car show circuit.

Well, I meant take it to car shows while you’re driving it. Yes, I’d sure enjoy driving it as often as I could.

Guys, you have GOT to do something about this ad with the hawaiian guys It’s a Kona ad I think. It wrecks the page completely and also the whole site every time it pops up in a chrome browser. It steals focus away from the comments or anything that isn’t that ad and jerks it back up there.

It’s an auto playing 30 second ad before ANOTHER video ad, it hoovers up battery on mobile and it literally makes your site unusuable. That single ad is making it very hard to browse this site, comment, or look at possible projects to buy. You really really need to ditch it or fix the code that it’s breaking.

There are browser tools called add-ons you can use to prevent issues like the one you are having. Search the web for more info, I use ABP for firefox.

Or perhaps they could fix their site. They have a say in what ads get pushed to it. This particular ad has been on there for months. This is the only website I visit that has a problem this obnoxious. It’s a video ad…ahead of another video ad. That’s bad enough, let alone that it auto plays, let alone that it steals focus from the entire page, or that it spins up the fans on my machine every time it loads. Something is very wrong with that particular ad and or the method of it’s delivery.

Hopefully that ad will just cycle out, because frankly it’s pushing me off the site a little bit more each time it makes it a pain in the ass to view content.

It’s going around the built in chrome adblocker, at any rate.

Like he said. There are so many free and easy to install tools out there. Why be bothered with ads on ANY site?

I tried chrome and I couldn’t get into any of my accounts without a hassle. Uninstalled all of in.

We are looking into the ad problems. Sometimes bad ones get through the ad network’s filters and there is no way we can approve every single banner before it’s shown on the site. Please don’t use ad blockers though guys. There is no way for us to make money if there are no ads on the page. You wouldn’t go into a newsstand and steal a magazine off the rack, so please don’t do the same to the publishers who create the content you read for free everyday. If you don’t want to deal with any ads, you can always become a paying member. Thanks.

I don’t block ads on the site typically, or in general if the ads aren’t obnoxious, but something about that one really plays hell with chrome. every time that kona ad pops up it yanks focus back up to it. There’s something aggressive and weird with it’s coding. Glad to hear it’s being looked into. For whatever reason it’s just that one ad, or it’s video window, or that it auto plays, or something. None of the other ads seem to do that.

It appears to be a car of contradictions. The exterior is reasonably sharp – at least superficially – although is that a panel seam or join visible in the pic of the rust spot at the rear wind RHS? The rotted carpets and mould/mildew(?) on the seats is more in line with moisture, and the other rust evident in the pics just seems too severe for a dry climate car. I think it may have been better to offer the car for sale in full ‘warts and all’ condition rather than partially improved.

Now listed for $6,500! I’m sorry, but if you look at all the pix on the link given, you will see that this car has a LOT of rust issues. In addition, it looks to have suffered a wet interior and/or damp storage, as evidenced by rust and corrosion on interior metal surfaces. Just remember, for all the rust you can see, there’s got to more that you CAN’T.

This car is being sold on Ebay with No Reserve, meaning the highest bidder at the conclusion of the auction will own the automobile.

    Red Bluff California

Red Bluff is on the northern edge of the Sacramento Valley, and is the third largest city in the Shasta Cascade region. It is about 30 mi (48 km) south of Redding, 40 mi (64 km) northwest of Chico, and 125 mi (201 km) north of Sacramento.

Red Bluff has a Mediterranean climate with cool winters and hot, dry summers.
    Annual precipitation averages 23.21 inches

Today was over 105 degrees and at 9 pm was still 90. Extreme hot and dry in the summer is an overstatement.

I don’t know these folks or the car but Russ Frey (on the bumper sticker) was a local politician who served for 2 decades and passed in 2014. Russ was a good man.

I’m incredulous of the advertised condition of the car. I would bet my last dollar that this is a cheap respray, many years ago. Bondo buggy. Looking at one of the rear wheel well pics, I see what I perceive as fresh undercoating, and a ton of rust still showing toward the rear of the well. How had better be a ‘well heeled’ lover of these cars, which I happen to love. To get it back to serious show condition, be prepared to sink 50 large to make it right.

Sorry folks a total money pit. How do I know?? I put $45,000 into a loaded one my Dad bought new because I promised him I would make it perfect before he passed on. My wife hated it. It handled like a wallowing barge. I was able to get only $12000 for it.

Pray it does not have the horrible vacuum operated Climate Control System. A nightmare to repair and keep running.

What restoration project isn’t a money pit? How many times do you hear a fellow say I invested 50k and can’t even get 25K for it. Restoration costs are so expensive these days hence the rise of Rat Rods. Kudos to anyone that saves a classic car cleans it up, gets it running and driving, enjoys it or sends it down the road.

It might be from a hot and dry area of California, but this car has had a lot of moisture inside, just look at the interior, that appears to be mold to me, and believe me mold is hard to control once it has been in a car, and there does appear to be a lot of rust issue in the engine bay, makes me wonder if this car had be in a flood!!!!

My first car was a 69 Riviera GS. All power options, bucket seats and full center console (there were three different consoles offered). And of course it was green, olive beige to be precise, with a green interior. That engine has a lot of power, and would be even better with some simple messages! I’m always on the lookout for one. You never forget your first.
As for this one, it’s already overpriced for the work it’s going to need, especially when you can get a perfect one for $15-20 grand. But one good thing is that OPGI now carries a wide array of parts, inside and out, for these under appreciated beauties.

Why did they put the 4 headlights so close together? Probably looks weird driving towards them at night.
