Fiberglass Project: 1962 Kellison J-5 Body

1962 Kellison J5

We would all love to own a vintage supercar, but not many of us can afford a classic Ferrari or Lamborghini. Here is an affordable alternative for the ambitious: a very sleek looking Kellison J-5 from the early ’60s. This auction is just for the body, so it’s going to need a chassis and power train. The shell is listed on eBay with a current bid of $2,600.

1960 Kellison J5 Side

The Kellison J-5 was one of the sleekest American car designs of its time. This car could easily be mistaken for an expensive Italian design and may be one of the most attractive American Specials ever built. The most attractive feature of these kits were their ability to fit on most any chassis, but the most popular and common chassis was a custom tube frame with Corvette front and rear suspension. This body isn’t currently mounted on a frame, but the sale includes the original Kellison instructions for building a tube frame.

1960 Kellison J5 Interior

Early kit cars came with very few pieces included in the kit, so the interiors of these cars had to be fabricated from scratch. This car includes many interior parts though, so we would clean everything up and see how much of it can be reused. The seller doesn’t say what all is included in the sale, so we aren’t sure how much comes with this shell. We hope all the glass is included to avoid having to have it all custom cut.

1960 Kellison J5 Front Corner

This car would be a blast to drive after it’s all put together and we have a feeling the value of these cars is only going to go up. We would build the Kellison frame and drop a Chevy 327 V8 into it. These cars actually had some success in racing in the ’60s and ’70s, so we would be tempted to keep it as light as possible and set it up for vintage racing. This auction still has 4 days left on it, but we hope the price doesn’t go up much more then what it is right now as it could make for an awesome project with a lot of potential as either a racer or a driver.
