French Lotus: 1983 Talbot Matra Murena

1983 Matra Murena Front Corner

Finding a car which offers Lotus like handling can be challenging, but this Talbot Matra Murena comes pretty close. And what it lacks in performance, it makes up in looks and character. This rare low mileage French sports car is being offered on eBay with a BIN price of $25,900 with the option to make an offer.

1983 Matra Murena Side

This car was imported into Canada in ’83 and it’s believed that only 3 were ever imported. Once in the country the car was used very little and eventually made its way to a private museum. It only has 10,000 original miles on it and is in original condition. The car even has all of its original documentation and is included with the sale. We doubt it would be too difficult to get this car licensed in the States and it would probably be the only one on American roads.

1983 Matra Murena Rear

One of the major selling points for this car is that it is essentially rust proof, as the body is made of fiberglass and aluminum and the chassis is galvanized. The Murena was the first production car to have a chassis that was entirely galvanized. The use of composite materials helped to keep the car’s weight under 2,500 lbs. This car came with the bigger 2.2 liter engine and a five speed gear box, plus all the available options including a factory spoiler and side louvers.

1983 Matra Murena Interior

The interior in this car is interesting to say the least. The seating arrangement is similar to that of a McLaren F1, but the driver doesn’t sit in the middle. It’s an interesting arrangement, but it does mean you can carry two friends in this mid-engined sports car instead of just one. The interior fabric chose would not be our first pick, but the interior has has held up well and looks almost like new.

1983 Matra Murena Rear Corner

We really like the looks of this car, but the seller’s asking price seems a bit high. We think the 2005 appraisal even seems too high; we would be more comfortable with a price under $18k. If you’re interested in this unique French sports car try making an offer and hope the seller takes it.
