Paging Steve McQueen: 1967 Mustang Fastback

00v0v_5o8pmfqesry_1200x900

I can’t think of too many movie cars made more famous than the fastback-bodied Mustang. This 1967 model featured here may be a year newer than the actual car used by Steve McQueen in Bullitt, but it sure does offer a nice homage to the classic movie car. Find it here on craigslist where the asking price is a heady $26,500.

Perhaps that price is reasonable, though, given the equipment list and supposed rust-free condition. The Mustang comes with a 289 V8 and factory power brakes and steering. Though it has an automatic instead of the Bullitt car’s manual transmission, the fastback body and blacked out Torque Thrust-style wheels are what make this example so appealing to me. I might even be tempted to swap in a 4-speed and paint it Highland Green.

The interior looks downright presentable for a barn find, complete with original carpeting. I don’t see much work needed here (other than the aforementioned transmission swap), and the seller claims buying this car will save you money compared to the costs associated with building one as straight as this. It’s said to be strong enough that you can drive it as-is, but finding out a bit more about its mechanical health might help to justify (or not) the asking price.

While Steve McQueen made our pulses pound with his memorable double-clutching shift action while hustling the 390, this 289-equipped Fastback might be a bit more of a cruiser with the automatic trans and smaller motor. While the seller does acknowledge some “scrapes and bruises,” he is firm on his asking price. If this Mustang is as good as he says it is, is it worth the price? You’re not likely to find the original Bullitt car anytime soon….

I had a friend just out of high school (’72) that had a ’67 fastback, only with a 6 and 3 speed on the floor. We beat the crap out of that car, and never once, for a second, ever though that car would bring 5 figures ( or more). Very desirable model, the ’67 fastback. Prices, as usual, are all over the place, but the seller doesn’t seem too far off with this one. Great find, like I say, most of these were trashed.

My very first car in hs, ’75. Bought for 500$ from the older local motorhead, he had put a 390 out of a mid60’s TBird in it, also had a rebuilt C6. I was in auto-shop and installed stainless chrome straight-pipes on her. It was a gray primer-spotted red with black buckets, no dents with nice chrome as far as I can remember. Had ET slotted mags all around. Basically started to learn all about car maintenance on her. Only car faster than me was a rich family senior with a 70 1/2 Z28 LT1.

67 & 68 Mustang fastbacks are my favorite year Mustangs, I would definitely paint it highland green and add a 390 4 speed then have a ball driving the hell out of it, letting a car like this sit for $$$ is for someone other than me.

As the story goes, the original Bullitt Mustang is “supposedly” in a garage or barn in Ohio, & the owner refuses to sell. Again, “supposedly”, Ford approached him & gave him a blank check for it, but he refused.

Bullitt car sold to NJ cop from the guy who got it from the studio – he did a couple of things – had it for a few years and sold it on. McQueen found out, wanted it back – offered the dude (who still has it) another car of similar value – cheap bastard. Rotting away, with holes for the camera support struts, somewhere. It’s all online.

The original is a 68, making this 67 one year OLDER …

To me this sounds like the Bullitt car was a 66.

Jeff – as noted, your wording is incorrect – makes it sound like the Bullitt car was a ’66.

I was scrolling down reading comments to see if anyone caught that slight error. Yes, Mr. McQueen did not drive a 1966 fastback in the movie.

’67 fastbacks are just a classic muscle car design. Beauty. I see an unfortunate number of them being tributized into an “Irene” clone; IMHO the stock look is so much nicer.

“Will not be low balled”- the sign of the delusional seller. Drop the price or keep it. If the seller hasn’t paid attention while watching the auctions,if it didn’t come from the factory as a 390 4bbl,4 speed, there is no money to be made restoring this one.

Bullitt was one of my all time favorite movies, and McQueen one of my favorite actors. My best friend Tom and I saw the movie together when we were at Texas Tech. A week or so later we came out of a restaurant in Lubbock that is at a “Y” intersection. As we walked out, a couple of drunk young guys rounded that tricky intersection must too fast and went into a spin, crashing into a light standard. Tom and I both saw the action at the same moment and in slow motion. The way the kids’ car began to spin reminded both of us of that seen in the movie where the bad guys spun out and crashed. Aside from “Gone In Sixty Seconds”, they don’t make good chase and/or crash movies like that anymore.

One of Ford’s best designs so I love this car.

On the Fantom Works TV show, they fixed a 1968 Ford Mustang owned by Kansas City Royals pitcher Tim Collins. The car looked pretty nice when it came it but shop owner Dan Short said he never saw a Mustang that did not need some rust repair. Sure enough, they found hidden rust.

There were three different 289 V-8s offered that year: the C-code 2bbl, the A-code 4 bbl, and the K-code HiPo.
Makes a big difference in value. I’d much rather have the A over the C, but would take the car nonetheless less. Looks like a nice survivor but I agree needs more pictures.

Both my brother and I each had a white 67 Mustang fastback while we were in high school. I gave $400 for mine in the early 80’s and he got his from a junkyard. Both cars ran. Mine was a complete rust free car with a 302 and four speed. I went on to college and told my brother to sell mine just to get it out of the way. He got $500 for it and I was happy with the deal at the time.

The surviving Bullitt Mustang is near Hendersonville, Tennessee. Owner recently passed away and the son has the car in his possession until the estate is settled. After that, the car will be available.

Everybody is avoiding saying it. I won’t. Not $26,500.00 for this one. Me? I might go $12,000.00 tops. Not a McQueen Ellanor, 390, 4 spd…289, auto, torn seats. Didn’t read much on either site, but, I’m not made of money
