SX Machine: 1977 Oldsmobile Omega SX

Where were you in 1977? Were you even alive yet? In 1977, the US turned control of the Panama Canal over to Panama, the first all-in-one personal computer, the Commodore PET (Personal Electronic Transactor), was introduced, and GM cranked out this 1977 Oldsmobile Omega SX hatchback. If a person were looking for a collectible Olds Omega this could be the one. The SX was actually not the top trim line, that distinction goes to the posh and plush Omega Brougham. The SX was positioned above the base F-85 and the next-in-line Omega. This one is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Craigslist with an $1,100 asking price. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Rocco B. for this submission!

By the mid-late-1970s, the time of this second-generation Olds Omega, a combination of regulations, pollution control equipment, and gas crunch after gas crunch took a lot of the zing out of vehicles. And, speaking of zing, this one is a mystery as far as the engine goes. The seller doesn’t list an engine size or give one mention of the engine other than “The car needs some engine work, it broke down on me and I don’t have the resources to fix it.” So, be prepared. They say that the reason they’re selling it, “against the advice of many”, is that they basically sick and tired of people asking them about it. “It was annoying to get stopped 10 times with “Nice car, I love that car, you selling it? I have a blah blah relative that might want to buy it”.. etc. Normally owners of unique vehicles like to be asked about them, but I guess if you’ve been hit with some scam or crooked buyers or something, that takes a lot of the fun out of it.

There are no photos of the front seats, which in my world automatically means that they’re not in good condition otherwise why just show the back seat? I could be wrong, and regular readers have seen examples of that awkward phenomenon. The color and pattern of the seats is something that just about any good upholstery shop should be able to duplicate so that shouldn’t be a huge deal. There is no mention of rust in the floors or anywhere else, and in the two body photos you can see a bit of rust. Florida vehicles can rust almost as badly as upper-Midwest vehicles can, but from salt in the air instead of salt on the roads. Stupid salt. The only other photo is one of the odometer showing 60,147 miles, which they say are actual miles. If you want to relive 1977, I can’t think of a better way than buying and restoring this Omega SX! What were you doing in 1977?

I don’t have anything nice to say about this, and I really liked my 77 Omega.

This one looks pretty crusty rusty. I bet there is more also that is hidden. Car looks like it was been exposed to moisture long term. Unusual but not highly valued IMO.

~ US returned the Panama Canal to Panama, [23 years later]

I’ve forever wanted a Chevy or Pontiac model with the canvas on the hatch.

160,000 miles maybe? I had a 79 olds omega brougham. I remember it had an oil bath air cleaner. I was in the military stationed in Brooklyn. The insurance was more then the car payment. Sold the car for more then I paid for it.

Sorry but I like it. Decent price and rare. Yes, a bit of work and I’d have to see it in person first but it’s another cheap way to get into the hobby. Install the engine of your choice and drive it.

The sexual revolution was in high gear, and automakers pushed the limits with names like “SX” ( clearly leaving out the “E”) or “SRX” ( the R kind of looked like an E) as if to imply, their vehicles were “SEXY”,,,, Their idea of a sexy car differs greatly from what I think one is( Italian exotics come to mind) but this is just a somewhat gussied up Nova. Great cars, whatever division you chose( Nova, Apollo, Omega, Ventura) but I never for a minute thought they were sexy. I think this is a great find, at a great price. With all the Nova’s lined up, you’ll have one of the few Oldsmobiles.

IF, and I say IF someone is interested in one of these, there is a very very nice red and silver one that’s been for sale about a block from my shop for the better part of the last 4 years. It has the 350, and I think the guy wants some stupid number like $8500 which is why it’s been sitting there, but…again…IF this is your cup of tea, let me know and I’ll get you pics and contact info.

Nice car, I do love these SX’s. Used to be so many around here back in the day, but now none. I have a ’77 Chevy Nova Concours and very little aftermarket resto pieces are available, would be worse for this Olds!

A lot like my ’77 Ventura SJ. 350, fully loaded. Power everything! Even came with the Pontiac ralley wheels trimmed in red to match the gold and red factory paint scheme!
