1 Of 1: 1967 K-Code Mustang Lean To Find

a3

Having had my parents own two 1967 Mustangs while I was growing up, I’ve got some very fond memories of them, which means they tend to catch my eyes! The seller of this rare specification and largely original Mustang has recently purchased it from the original owner, literally in a covered lean to where it had sat since 1981! It’s one of one so equipped according to its Marti Report and is currently awaiting its new owner in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. It’s up for sale here on eBay, where needless to say bidding has been spirited so far, and the reserve has been met!

This is a picture of the car “as found”. It’s a shame it wasn’t parked all the way under cover somewhere, and the heavier rust on the front of the car reflects that. Although the Mustang is largely original, don’t kid yourself into thinking it won’t need a lot of refurbishment. This isn’t one of those preserve as is finds–this one will need to be restored.

The only completely unoriginal panel can be seen here in the rear driver’s side quarter panel, which was replaced after a fender bender with an OEM panel sometime prior to the car being taken off the road. It’s pretty obvious the paint wasn’t refinished quite to OEM standards, though. Surprisingly, the car was delivered with those wheel covers, not the typical styled wheels. I remember them from both of our ’67s — you can get a nasty cut cleaning out those triangular holes around the outer edge — I know that from experience.

One intriguing item is this Mustang Road Rallye Participant badge the original owner said was on the car when they got it from the dealer. As far as I can tell, these were events intended to publicize the Mustang held in 1966 and 1967, but I couldn’t find much else. Does any reader know more?

The original seats found their way into the previous owner’s bass boat (!), so these are a set of plain 1967 buckets that will need reupholstering anyway. And yes, that’s the ground you see right about where the driver’s feet would go. There are plenty of pictures of the rusty underside, so any prospective bidder will know exactly what they are getting into. One of the few things that is missing is the original shift knob, but that is the original top loader four speed in there. I wish I got to show you the engine, but there are only closeups of various components and no general under hood shot. We are assured, though, that the original K-code 289 is in there, and enough detail shots are there of part and casting numbers that I’m sure those that know can verify it. What I want to know is whether or not you would like to be the person who adds the next mile to the 86,753 that the car is currently showing?

I have to say, if it’s one car that was incredibly popular, that I should have stashed away every Mustang fastback I came in contact with, I’d be a wealthy man today. Probably, one of the most sought after Mustangs now, and we trashed them. But $30+g’s for a rust bucket like this? Wow! I’ll agree this is a rare car,( THIS rare?) but apparently was unknown to the owner, as this should have been inside. Good ones seem to hover around $40-$50g’s. IDK, lot of work here, just can’t believe what this is bidding at. You’ll have $50g’s in this easily when done. I guess we had it made years ago, when these were $500 cars, and it’s going to take someone 100 times that today to enjoy the same car. Times sure have changed.

I paid $1000 for a K code with the 4:30 gears and 4spd in 1978 what a blast to drive had the Shelby roll bar and Holman moody intake too. Drove it to Green valley raceway ran 13:16s and drove it home on the weekends. Loved that Car

No way I see 30K for this rust bucket only because it’s 1 of 1 that came with a 8 track player from the factory. I guess some people have way too much money. PASS !!!

The Marti window sticker. on my 67 Z code Fairlane with AM 8 track said it was a $135 option! That’s a lot of bucks for 1966. Car was built first day of 67 production August 22 1966 VIN 1000023!

Actually, it does when it’s talking about the 8 track tape. Second page. Note: this is NOT me saying it’s worth what it’s going for!

About 5 years ago I spotted a similar rusty car on craigslist in Ft Lauderdale Florida. It was a red 66 GT 289 4 speed. For $1,000! Being in NJ I tried called my lady friend in Ft L to ask her to go look at the car. Of course she never answered her phone and a call to the seller he had just sold it. Two weeks later it’s back on craigslist for $6,000. Obviously a flipper.
I’m sure by now it’s been restored and worth 35 times the original price.

The current price point of over $30,000 is very high given the fully restored valuation. This will be an expensive restoration given the current condition of this Mustang, engine rebuild, transmission, brakes, suspension, paint, interior, extensive rust repair, it appears to need it all. Unless the buyer is a very talented body man and does virtually all the work themselves, I am not sure how you get out from under this one from a resale standpoint, if that is the ultimate goal. Very few of the 1967 options either except for the 8-track. Good luck to the buyer, the Seller must be doing a cool dance by now……

This was my favorite year for the mustang and I would love to have one. This ones only about 3 hrs away BUT! over $30k? I wouldn’t pay $30k for driver quality example, let alone this rust bucket. Good example of more money than brains.

Most every Marti report can be run to make a car 1 of 1 for an additinal charge. They did the same thng with my ’68 Mercury Cougar XR-7 GT 390 4-speed 3:25 Equa-Lok rear axle by taking the exterior color, interior color and then looking at the factory interior options.

To me, the original k code still in the car, if it runs makes it rare enough…..many didn’t survive through the warranty period….the body, on the other hand…

You are correct about lasting through the warranty(90 days or 4K miles). But 30K?
Does anyone make matchbooks anymore for shimming the 8 track tape, so it won’t drag? LOL
