1925 Dodge Screenside: 90 Year Old Survivor

1925 Dodge Brothers

This old truck listed on craigslist is said to be an unrestored survivor with only 37,474 miles. It appears very original, including the original 4cyl. engine. One can only imagine what it was used for with its partly screened in truck bed. Seriously, what do you use a truck like this for? The front and back of the truck are wide open, so you couldn’t haul birds or other small animals back there. The $12,000 asking might seem a bit steep, but perhaps it’s worth for this bit of the past. It’s located near Columbus, Ohio.

Beautiful truck. I really like the roofline on this.

Trucks like this were used for a variety of reasons including the sale of produce, newspaper delivery and tool sharpening businesses. While the mileage seems to be low by today’s standards, it would be in the 300,000 range.

Dodge made these popular trucks from 1917 on with very few changes. They have gobs of torque, are simple to work on and were lightyears ahead of the better selling Fords on every front. They were used by dog catchers, local freight companies, grocery stores and, most of all, by the military. Probably the biggest issue with all cars of this era were the two wheel brakes, which can be pretty ineffective on steep hills in wet weather. Gulp.

i have difficult time thinking it unrestored. Plywood bed, ford in the 60’s used hardwood, the upholstery looks much less than 90 years old and the blue paint in the bed as well. Hummm…. Even so it is very nice.

But it doesn’t say that it’s unrestored, which it seems to be, just not completely accurately. You’re right on about the plywood bed ( who in the hell would do that?) and the blue. The bed was, and should be, oak and the metal black like everything else on the truck. Come to think of it, aren’t the runningboards plywood as well? Still, I know that I’d love to have this truck if one of you guys buys it for me. Heh heh.

I rode in a friend’s ’28 on a rough dirt road at about 20 to 30 mph in 3rd gear. It was amazing to me how smooth the ride was, big wheels, suspension with a lot of travel, lots of torque, went up hill and down engine at constant speed, sort of like a tractor where you set the hand throttle and just steer on the flat. But like the Model T, what can you do with it on today’s roads?

Well, it’d be hard to beat at what most antique vehicles get used for: parades, local meets and just running around town – as long as you don’t live in some major metro area where traffic is fast and dangerous.
