At first glance, this might not look like anything too special, but if you look closely you will notice that this 1954 Ford has a glass roof! Well, actually it is was plexiglass and it only covered the area above the passengers, but this rare feature should make this project a worthwhile endeavour. We have seen a few Mercurys with a similar Sun Valley roof option, but this is actually the first Crestliner we have featured. This particular one is going to need some major work, but the end result will be stunning. The seller mentions that the less desirable inline-six isn’t currently running, but that a new replacement glass top is included in the sale. Find it here on craigslist in St. Louis for $3,800. Just the value of the new glass top has got to pretty high. The seller has a few other interesting cars I can see in the backround.
A Crestline Skyliner with a 6? Oh well, I knew an engineer for GM who had a ’64 Impala SS with a 230/Powerglide. It just seems that a top of the line car should have a V8.
Usually I like to see the original engine stay with the car, but there’s always an exception to the rule and I think this is one. I would, however, like to stay period-correct and drop in a Y-block (if you can find one) or maybe a next-generation FE 352. Anything bigger than that will just overwhelm the chassis. This car can never be a sports car, so aim to be a boulevard cruiser.
A real reason for the V8 transplant is the need to put air conditioning in this car because in summertime you just cook under that Plexiglas. People were a lot tougher back then than now, but even so, the Skyliners were poor sellers because of the heat issue.
