1955 Pontiac Star Chief: 4 Door Survivor

Pontiac Star Chief

I don’t know why the owner calls this 1955 Pontiac Star Chief a hot rod. It is said to be completely original. The owner only had to replace the fuel pump to revive the old Starchief, so it must not have sat for very long. It apparently runs pretty well because they drove it 800 miles from Oregon to LA. The body is straight and solid and the paint has the usual patina. They provided pictures of the underside and it appears reust free! The interior needs lots of work, though, including headliner. The owner is claiming only 45,800 miles. How does $4500 sound for a running, driving car? One could use this as a daily driver as you restore it bit by bit. Or perhaps, just drive it as it is perhaps doing a little interior work and mechanical work as needed. The owner only has the one picture in the posting here on craigslist, but they have posted many more here.

Because many sellers are either clueless or deceitful.

“Hot Rod”? May be because in the last Video (dropbox link site), they take off from a stop and it chirps second in a very healthy sortof way for such a ‘basically barn find’ car. I thought this era had very slippy hydramatic-style transmissions so i was surprised to hear it shift so sharply between gears in that vid…

I love the chrome stripping on the old Star Chiefs. Makes the car look more swoopy. And yes, that’s an automotive design term, you can look it up! ^_^

I’m not sure how you can look at the pics and say it’s rust free. I see holes in the underside in what looks to be the rear footwell and possible in the spare tire well. I have my doubts about the mileage claim as well. But I think it could be a good buy for someone and a nice car to drive and enjoy.

Haha, what a neat machine they discovered and revived! Great car, good photo-documentation, and sounds like a helluva fun road trip. In April 1958, i was delivered home from the hospital in PA in one very similar, a 55 Pontiac ‘860’ 4drsd..

I parked a few spaces away from this very car at last weeks Auctions America auction at the Santa Monica airport. It was very stock looking, not hot rodded, and there was definitely some level of rust. Still, it very much had the vibe of a noble survivor.

I want to build a 2Dr gasser one of these. Black with flames, little chrome, no front bumper, straight axle, deep set of gears big and little Americans, fenderwell headers, and a pissed off Pontiac stroker with a tunnel ram. Just barely streetable, would be fun for cruise night or take two the track too.

I like these better than the chevy’s. Obscurity and if you ask me better looks imo.
