1957 Chevrolet Bel Air For $5k!

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

You know a car is something special when three different people send it in. This 1957 Chevy is claimed to be a family heirloom. It doesn’t run and there aren’t many photos in the listing, but what I can see looks good. The best part though is that the seller is only asking $5,000 or best offer. That seems like a bargain for one of the most iconic classic cars around! Find it here on Hemmings out of Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Thanks goes to Barn Finds readers RD, Steve Y, and Doug M!

This one looks like a fair deal. It will take a bit to get it into top shape but it isn’t too bad.

That’s a Screaming Deal! Note: I bought a ’57 Bel Air 2 dr hardtop in apparently similar condition to today’s feature car for $5 in 1971 (had no motor & trans). After a couple of months, had A-1 Auto Wrecking hauk it away, Think they paid me $10 for it. In 1980 I bought a ’57 Bel Air 2 dr hardtop w/o motor & trans but otherwise complete for $50 a bit rougher than the one in Hemmings. Flipped it for $600

Looks like a deal from the left coast. I’d be surprised if it’s still available. I love 57 Chevys in Sierra Gold.

If this was located in California, as opposed to Old Saybrook, Connecticut, the asking price would be closer to $10,000. Should be interesting to see if the Northeast car guys will run up the bidding.

Looks like a good deal, and Old Saybrook is a pretty little CT town near the water, so worthwhile to visit, but it would have helped to say more about the car and especially:

    what engine?
    what transmission?
    condition of frame and underside?
condition of engine bay and trunk?

Ad says “auto trans.,” which of course doesn’t give a clue about the engine.

Still, this looks worth taking a shot at. Tired, yes, but what’s shown seems complete — are the stock wheels/hubcaps all there? — and rust doesn’t seem to have reached Terminal Velocity.

If the seller was smart enough to list at Hemmings and not a local site, I’m sure he/she is smart enough to answer questions and, perhaps, take a few strategic photos if asked.

I’m thinking it’d be a fun project, and not terribly costly to put in solid shape. EVen with the Stovebolt, would be a fine cruiser.

Right, thanks Ray. After you said that it reminded me that a gold “V” on the hood & trunk lid will indicate a V8, and yes there are gold Vs there, so it looks like an auto V8. If the engine/trans are serviceable after it’s running this still looks like a deal, especially if all a buyer wants is to get it running, clean it up, and have a nice inexpensive weekend driver that will never be worth less than it is today.

Looks like the one I had in 65 and 66. Traded it for a 62 Chevy ragtop. 327 300hp 4speed.

Nice looking ’57! Underneath shots would be great! Is that original paint? It does look like it was stored indoors and trotted outside for pics. More info would be good, but we’ve seen much worse trying to be sold for much more! This shouldn’t be on Hemmings very long!

It was a 283 at one time but don’t know if it still is.

I love the post 1957 Chevy and this is my favorite factory color. I wish there was more specific information about its condition. It’s about two hours from my house and therefore very tempting.

I drive through Saybrook on my way to work every day. I might have to stop and check this one out.

Seems to good to be true. I mean don’t you think someone at Hemmings would have put the word out to someone they “knew” before it ever made it to the publication? There are others who pay extra to get the magazine earlier than the regular subscribers too so cautiously optimistic. Seller loves taking pictures of the passenger side, but not so much the driver’s side. I hope it is true though John and you find a real treasure.

It does look like a bargain, You would obviously have to redo the interior and wheel, but i wish that there was at least one pic of the engine.

I sent the seller a message asking, “What’s the absolute least you’d take for your 57 Chevy? What’s your name and number? Mike” The seller responded, “I have underestimated the interest in this car at $5k or OBO. I am trying to respond to many requests. I have decided that I must get an appraisal from a local restorer to accurately set a fair price that I am comfortable with, which is what I should have done in the first place. My mistake! This will take some time.”
