1959 Lancia Flaminia Berlina: Solid Shell

lanciaflaminia

One of the first entries I wrote up for Barn Finds a few years ago was a Lancia Flaminia, and like many Lancias of the era, it was quite rusty. That’s why this example here on eBay should appeal to fans of the Italian brand as it is impressively straight and rust-free. The seller claims he has one too many cars and this one has to go, and given his familiarity with the breed, buyers should have some level of confidence that this limousine body shell is a good starting point. Given it’s from the drier region of Florida (away from the coastal areas), I’d say you could do far worse for a Lancia project. Having dealt with rust on a few project cars, I’d almost always rather find a motor and interior than chase corrosion for months on end. Does this seem like a deal or would you hold out for a more complete example?

A Lancia that is rust free….haha..that’s a good one! I ended up with the car in the second photo in the “related finds” section, yeah that rusty one.
Short story: bought a Flaminia Coupe off Evil-bay, site un-seen. After it showed up to my house on flatbed I began crying the blues when I really saw how much cancer the thing had!
I thought all was lost until one evening I saw a video of Leno driving his Lancia and he just raving about how nice it drives. Next day, I decided to take mine for a spin around the block. When I got back and stepped out, I had goose bumps! I couldn’t believe how good the car felt, shifted, sounded! It just felt perfect. It was the perfect ride, a total religious-auto experience. I ended up selling off all my other cars so I could focus on restoring my Flaminia.
So yeah, parts are nosebleed expensive and hard to come by, the rust is maddening, but man, that ride! It changes you.

Lancias are terrific drivers, but finding all the parts to make this into a car you could sit in and drive would be a long, very expensive task. If you could find the parts, you would still have a berlina with no title or VIN plate, not one of the sporty coupes or cabrios that were offered around the same time this car was built. The best thing for this shell would be to have a rusty berlina that has all the needed parts to make one good car.
