1962 Corvette: Dream Or Nightmare?

1962 Corvette Project

There are a lot of people out there, myself included, that dream of owning an early Corvette. There is just something about these fiberglass classics that is special. They have often been called America’s sports car, but if you’ve ever driven one you know they aren’t really sports cars. Compared to the American sedans of the day, they were quite nimble, but were still slow compared to some of the stuff coming from Europe. That’s alright though, because not everything is about performance and handling. Sometimes you want a car simply because of how it looks. That being said, this ’62 Vette isn’t looking all that great right now. The seller’s father owned this car since ’63 and obviously enjoyed driving it, but later in his life he had a small accident in it and decided to try to restore it himself. He never finished the job, so it will need a lot of bodywork. He drove it about 5 years ago, but it has been parked ever since. If you have been dreaming of restoring a Corvette, you can find this one here on eBay in Scottsdale, Arizona. The question is, would this be your dream project or your worst nightmare?

I’ve probably taken on projects in worse condition but that price seems a tad high for this one. I certainly wouldn’t mind investing the time it would take to bring this one back.

’62 Vette = Dream. This ’62 Vette = Nightmare. “just has a bunch of dust on it” is quite the laughable statement. Ton of glass work, windshield shot, interior trashed. Engine however looks fairly sound. As much as I love these cars, the price on this one puts it in the not so fast category.

Way overpriced—maybe they think it is worth more because it is a “super rare” front wheel drive Vette :)

Who puts a trailer hitch on a vette? What was he towing?

    A few problems here……

Owned almost since new, yet very badly neglected for years……engine is smallest, least desirable for the year…..the father is said to have rebuilt the engine, the same person who seriously neglected the car for decades……camshaft and oil pan lying on the floor…..rust perforation in the frame, yet the car is in Arizona….what is its history? What was the tow hitch used to tow? What’s the car’s mileage?

I don’t know the former owner, but I don’t think I would want an engine in one of my cars rebuilt by him. I don’t know the seller, but there just might be some hard sell here.

All this with an opening bid price of $29K for a car that the SCM Guide has at a low estimate of $45K for an excellent driver. I don’t think so.

Only if it was free, even then you could get up side down.

Very questionable description of cars history as well as owner, run my friend as far away from this deal as possible.

Take one of the zeros off of the price and it might be right for that P.O.S.’s condition. I’d like to know what the seller has been smoking, cuz it’s gotta be a lot better than anything I did back in college, many long years ago.

way over priced as some have said…could easily spend over 100 grand on the restoration that car was not taken care of. as Gomer says….shame…. shame

Having gone down this path with a ’63, and seeing what little I can of the frame on this car, I concur. RUN!

So is he supplying it restored for that price ? A case of somebody who watched BJ auction and figures their POS is worth a mint

When I first saw this, I thought $22K would be the opening bid. From there it would go up. Of course we don’t know what the reserve is, but it hasn’t been met yet. So yes, (to quote another site – Crack Pipe) fits here.

Have to agree with skloon. Too many folks see the auction prices of restored cars or running cars and thing that the basket case in the barn should bring the same. Have run into this several times checking on cars for sale. Example a 70 Gto that was a Lemanns the owner said it’s got all the GTO stuff on it! 67 Cougar it’s the same car as the eliminator! Most common 6 cylinder 66 notchback mustang with auto, it’s the same as that 2X2 Hi Po 4speed mustang.

I’ve fixed worse than this. The price is too much and you’d be upside down with it in the end. A friend has one turn key for 35k.
