Rustic 4×4: 1963 International Scout 80

This 1963 International Harvester Scout 80 is said to be in running condition although it looks like it was just pulled from a field. With mismatched colored body panels and tow bar, the Scout has survived 57 years of use and now is knocking on the restoration door in need of some TLC. The Scout is revered by many as the first SUV. This 1963 Scout is located in Eden, Utah and is listed for sale here on eBay. With 4 days remaining in the auction, the Scout is bid to $3,350.

The 1963 Scout 80 was fitted with a 152 cubic inch inline four cylinder engine and mated to a factory 4 speed transmission from the factory. The reliable engine was rated at 86 net horsepower and 93 gross horsepower by the manufacturer. While not very powerful, it was sufficiently strong enough to move the 3,900 pounds Scout wherever it needs to go. Although running, the seller states that the engine needs a tune up which probably means the carburetor needs to be rebuilt and there may be some other issues.

The seller has done some brake work already but the brakes are going to need some attention. This is often an overlooked area of fixing up a classic. You always want to be able to stop! The body looks complete and has good glass windows all the way around. The interior is dirty but functional. The driver’s seat will need to be repaired or recovered. As for rust, their is surface rust in several placed and the rockers beneath the doors are rusted and the floor board will need to be replaced in the rear cargo area and passenger area.

The International Harvester Scout was produced from 1960 to 1979. The Scout 80 was the first generation of the Scout and produced from 1960 to 1965. The Scout 80 was followed by the Scout 800 that was manufactured until 1971 and then the Scout II was built from 1971 to 1980. This Scout looks cool but is going to need some work to repair the rust and make it a dependable vehicle for off road adventures.

I had a 62 years ago, great for off-road, but not so pleasant on the highway, 65mph felt like armageddon. For winter driving, be sure and dress appropriately as heat was almost nonexistent. Later models were much improved. Tough little buggies though, definitely worth restoring, although parts can be a problem.

Classic or antique, whichever you want to call vehicles that have survived for almost 60 years. I have a ’61 Scout pickup and it takes me anywhere I want to go. Every time I park it, it seems to draw a crowd. Parts are available, but expensive. Even as rough looking as the one featured will garner praise from people that owned one.
