1963 Turner Sports Mk III Roadster

If the Cortina got you thinking about going vintage racing this summer, then you should take a look at this 1963 Turner Sports Mk III. Only about 100 of these cars were ever produced and this one is claimed to be in unrestored with only 36k miles on the odometer. The eBay auction ends soon and the bidding is at $7,355 so you will want to hurry if interested.

Turner Sports Cars Ltd was formed in 1951 when Jack Turner decided to build his own lightweight sports cars. He had been preparing race cars since the 40s, so he had good idea of what would be needed to create a fun road car. A fiberglass body and simple chassis were used to keep things light and parts were sourced from existing cars to keep costs down.

After Jack suffered a heart attack, the company went defunct and this was the last model ever produced. This car benefited from all the improvements Jack had made over the years including this Cortina 1500 engine. Twin DCOE 40s feed fuel and air into this specially tuned engine so we are sure there is plenty of power. A few parts have been swapped out to keep the her on the road, but for the most part everything is just as it was when it left Wolverhampton.

No frills in here, but there are plenty of gauges to keep an eye on the vitals. The seller claims that the interior is original, but those seats look so good that it is hard to believe. Then again, this car has not covered many miles, and the ones that it has were obviously done by a very loving owner. It has been through a few hands, but documented history is included and it is well known in the Turner circle.

If you are in the market for a Turner, it isn’t going to get much better than this. Original and unrestored, all in working order, and even a hardtop is included. Many of the parts can be sourced and there is a support network of enthusiasts. If this were parked in our garage, we would be planning out our summer to include a few hillclimbs and the Turner Reunion this September in Ohio.

Doesn’t look like twin carbs to me. But a cool car!

Lovely little car. Text reads “twin 40 DCOE”. Picture reveals a downdraught unit. I’d drive it!

Shades of AH Sprite–but this li’l feller looks to have quite a bit more power. Looks like a ton of fun. It’d be nifty to see a pair of 40DCOEs strapped on there, if the rest of the engine and exhaust can handle them. Cosworth valve cover–maybe a Cosworth head?

You guys are right. That is a single carb in the photo, but the seller mentions in their listing that the twin carb setup is currently installed. Both are included though.

I think that engine is the same as the early pinto engines, but not positive. Also the early fiesta ford built used this motor. cool car.

I think the early Pintos (and Capris) had the 1600cc Crossflow Ford, a later development of the 1500 non-crossflow design (the 1600 is also the Formula Ford engine).
