1967 Divco: Ice Cream Truck

1967 Divco Dairy Truck

Spring has come fast here in Boise, as I type this it is 75 degrees out. While it’s great for some top down driving, it has been a quick adjustment and my body apparently isn’t ready to acclimate to this weather. When I saw this Divco dairy truck I instantly wanted it, simply because it make me think of ice cold milk and ice cream! The seller claims it runs and drives nicely. It has been serviced and everything works, although the seller isn’t sure whether the refrigeration system still works. For just a fun driver it wouldn’t be necessary to have, but I would love to have it working so I could escape the heat and have my own supply of ice cream on hand at all times! Find this Divco here on eBay in Malden, Missouri.

During the early 60’s I remember one like this delivering milk to my grandmother’s house. The guy was dressed in an all white uniform and wore a white hat much like a policeman. He drove the truck standing up which I thought was wild. Great memories.

I lived in New Jersey as a kid and remember that the Dugan Bread guy drove a truck like this and dropped off bread every other day. Not sure if he was standing, though.

I’d get it operating well enough that I could drive it to car shows & sell ice cream! By the fall I could use it to haul around all my “crowd favorite” truck trophies! ^_^

Looks to be a Ford big six which was pretty common in the later model Divcos.

Thanks DT. I knew about the Continentals but the ohv engine was not recognizable to me.

How adorable! It’s probably for the best that I don’t have unlimited resources and storage space.

Seems to me that there’s going to be a ton of rust under those add-on lower panels judging by the rear edges. For the asking price it’s not original enough.

In the movie Scrooged I am pretty sure the milk truck David Johansen drives thru in his taxi is a Divco

Interesting that the seller is using the ad copy written by the previous owner in the eBay listing. Why on earth would anyone do that?

      Greetings All,
Divco’s, as far as I know, were all driven standing up. Made sense if you were a milkman. Never thought about other delivery uses.
I think Continental made the engine, an industrial engine manufacturer.
Was always surprised these didn’t run afoul of motor vehicle or federal laws regarding their standing driving position.

This one is powered by a Chevrolet inline six from the looks of the ebay ad.

Nope, it’s a Ford “big six” either a 240 or 300, impossible to tell without measuring the stroke. Great engine regardless, and most likely a 300. I don’t know if Divco put them in or a later owner did, but they are simple, strong, reliable engines that are easy to work on.

I was thinking it was a Chevrolet engine because of the way the valve cover looks.
