1967 Volkswagen Bus: Shrunken Dragster

1967 VW Bus Dragster

Just a few days ago, we featured a shorty conversion of a Bel Air wagon that many of you found to be, well, stupid! I tend to agree with you. Some of the comments also made reference to the fact that a few of these conversions found favor with drag racers, and it appears this latest find here on eBay validates that claim. This 1967 VW Bus has a history on the drag circuit on the East Coast but the seller doesn’t know much more about it. As you might expect with an ex-drag car, it has plenty of high-performance upgrades, but the condition and specifications of those components remain a mystery, so you’re taking a bit of a gamble if you decide to cast a bid.

A quick bit of Googling reveals there were some hopes of restoring this Bus a few years ago, but they obviously never materialized. Additional photos are available here, and there’s some idle internet chatter here that died off in 2013 regarding an initial attempt to restore it. Did anyone see it race back in the day?

Pretty cool bit of recent history.

You aren’t taking this one anywhere but straight ahead both literally and figuratively after whats been done you aren’t bringing it back to road duty.

As a bus owner for 20 plus years I can’t imagine how you can see out the windows in that position. Just staging it must be a challenge!

I think it’s time has come and gone. Time for the crusher.

Not sure why the original builder would have chosen of all available vehicles this one, probably the least aerodynamic on the face of the earth, for a dragster.

That IS the reason. The irony!

Not a lot of VWs there but there WAS a beautiful (if over restored) 21/23 window, and a Standard in Hippy guise.
