Are there some basket-cases that deserve to be rescued? Sure. But what about when it’s a more common domestic hot rod, like so many others, complete with significant body damage? That’s a highly personal decision. This 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28 here on eBay has caught the attention of more than a few bidders, and there is an unmet reserve. Mind you, this is a car that was totaled close to 40 years ago and has sat rotting in the woods ever since. There are a host of good options, however, from the Positraction rear end to the 8K tachometer and functioning cowl hood. The engine is a factory replacement, installed after the original engine was blown but before the car was wrecked. Needless to say, it didn’t have an easy life. Is all the interest in the VIN plate or the various options – or, is someone crazy enough to rebuild it?
Wonder if it’s still haunted by the ghost of the dead driver….
Some time ago I read about a totaled 70 Challenger, and it was fixed after sitting for about the same amm’t of time . if that could be saved, so could this. you’d have to be a die hard Chevy lover, and a Z lover this was nice when new ( or nearly new) good luck to whomever gets it

Somehow when I see things like this alarms go off about people being unscrupulous & doing bad things to nice, complete cars.,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if a car is totaled as this obviously is or should be, then that vin. # and the corresponding body tag should be killed and put to rest.
Just ad one Dynacorn body one Chevy crate motor and a crapload of stuff from Year One, or as to quote Jessie James ‘all that’s left to do is everything’ this is a VIN donor
my exact thoughts. a restored Z would bring $50K+. this cars tags will prob and up on a dynacorn body or a stock Camaro already in good shape. not ethical or legal, but that hasn’t stopped folks in the past …..

I’m really puzzled about this…….how does a guy blow up such a special car’s engine, then total the whole car, then let it sit in the woods for 4 decades with every panel damaged and getting more and more rusty with each decade, and then still “Have a clear title in my name” for the car?
I guess he cared more about that piece of paper than about the car.
Exactly I would take it for 2 grands and started as a project with my kid. With a Dynacorn body , Chevy crate motor 440 or so and a crapload of stuff from Year One. I missed a 69 for 3.5 k back in 1998 an a camaro like this worth 69k now in Argentina . Makes you thinks better…
It seems like it’s too hard to restore and not enough there for a decent parts car. And who know what that frame looks like. So are the VIN tags for a re-body what’s attracting the interest? I hope not. I’d love to see someone bring it back,

Looking at this poor Camaro reminds me of something I saw once. Went with a friend to look at property. The former owner had recently passed. We pull up to an older run down farm. Our tour guide was related. Looking around it was easy to figure out the old guy must have kept every car and truck he had ever owned. Must have been a sea of sedans from the 40’s to the 1970’s Many hard to see due to being covered in brush. It was then I saw something really out of place. Sticking out of the brush I was staring at the back of a badly twisted 1967 Chevy II Nova Super Sport.. It was the real deal. Seems it had a story. The only son of the property owner was killed in it. The kid was hit by an Eighteen Wheeler that went left of center on a narrow two lane road. Wasn’t his fault. The car was recovered and brought back to the farm where it had sat undisturbed for years. Still had his girlfriends name lettered on the dash too. Still sends chills thinking about it. Not saying it is the case with this Camaro but knowing if the driver was killed in it would you still want to save it? Not me.

And you guys are wondering whats going on here??? If you guys think anyones going to jail over this stuff, spend some time at the auctions, but here in Portland Oregon there are multiple high end collector car shops who have sales floors filled with shiny toys like these. Very rarely, someone gets their wrists slapped. Boyd Coddington at one point got busted, when state and federal authorities raided his shop he had a filing cabinet full of titles and Vins. While he ended up as a very visual example of being bad, he did NOT spend a day in jail, and went right back to building cars.
Im not defending the practice, nor advocating doing so, but jeez louise folks, open your eyes. Casting numbers are one thing. But engine numbers are stamped all the time. I have seen in some high end collector shops the stamping tools, holders and number and letter sets in all the required sizes and fonts. I have no illusions what they were for. Biggest swap meet in the west of the Mississippi is here in Oregon. I see table after table of motors, trans, rear ends with the date codes clearly shown on tags. Guess why? I also see ooodles of Europeans, Asians, Kiwis, and Ozzies all buying up vehicles. Loaded in shipping containers, and away they go. No big surprise what this auction is for. Every part for building this car is in a catalog. Do the math if you know how to build cars and figure out what you could build one for if you do all or most of the work yourself.
Even Spicolli’s dad couldn’t fix this one.

Doug Towsley, From your post sounds like you own the car already. If not why don’t you take the plunge? If no one will go to jail over swapping vins as you say. You take the risk. Re fi the house and have at it. Because people stamp engine blocks and have the tools to do so making cars appear original in an effort to add value doesn’t make it right. However removing a vin plate from a vehicle is not legal. Pretty sure the person who steps up and spends the money after the car is rebuilt would have a solid case. Once posted on ebay for sale including the vin and clear description of NOT having the original motor for the world to see it is forever. Good luck
