Barn Fresh: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

It is a reality of life that people who purchased cars like this 1969 Mustang Mach 1 when they were new are reaching an age where they can no longer enjoy these classics, or they have sadly passed away. That means that they or their families are faced with moving these sorts of cars on to new owners. So, instead of the supply of barn finds dwindling in the coming years, the flow could potentially increase. While it is undoubtedly sad news for the owners and their families, it does provide a glimmer of hope for individuals who are searching for a project car. It isn’t clear whether that is the story behind this Mach 1, but it has been sitting in this barn for more than 20-years. The time has come for it to find a new home, and I have to say a big thank you to Barn Finder Chris S for referring it to us. The Mustang is located in Cairo, Georgia, and has been listed for sale here on Facebook. The sale price for the Mach 1 has been set at $15,000 OBO, but the owner might be open to a trade for the right vehicle.

It’s amazing the sort of transformation that this Black Jade Mustang has undergone by being treated to a simple wash. Below the dust is a classic with panels that look remarkably straight. The paint isn’t perfect, but it presents well enough for the Mustang to be driven as an original survivor. The owner does admit that there is rust in the floors but doesn’t reveal how extensive this is. There are no signs of any significant external rust, although the quality of the photos and the dark paint make it difficult for me to state this categorically. The Mach 1 is fitted with tinted glass, and this appears to be in good condition. The trim and chrome show no significant issues, and nor do the wheels.

Once again, the photo quality isn’t great, but the Black interior of the Mustang does show a lot of promise. It looks like it is all original, with no visible aftermarket additions. The upholstered surfaces appear free from rips or splits, while the dash seems to be perfect. The carpet shows no significant wear or fading, while the console has survived well. The next owner will receive a bonus because the Mustang does come fitted with air conditioning. I haven’t included the single engine photo that the owner supplies because it is so blurry it would give you a migraine. Under the hood is a 351ci Windsor V8, but the owner doesn’t tell us which version it is. If it is an H-Code, then it would produce 250hp, while an M-Code would deliver 290hp. Bolted to this is a 3-speed automatic transmission, while the Mustang also receives power steering and power front disc brakes. That 351 doesn’t currently run, and the owner doesn’t indicate whether it turns freely. If it is free, then it might not take a lot of tinkering to have it purring once again. However, given the fact that the Mustang has been sitting for so long, there will undoubtedly be work required before it could be considered to be roadworthy.

This Mustang Mach 1 will need some work, but it does appear to be a promising project car. If the rust in the floors isn’t too severe, it could be possible to return it to a mechanically roadworthy state. Then it would be a matter of driving and enjoying this classic until time and circumstances allow you to undertake some restoration work. Potentially, the supply of good barn finds is not going to dry up soon, and there is the possibility that better cars could surface in the coming years. The question is whether you would be willing to take that risk hoping that something better comes along. It is a serious question because, after all, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. That means that this is a classic that could be worth a closer look.

I’m not a Mustang expert, but why would a ’69 Mach I in this condition be offered at basically half price? As usual, I have no answers, only questions.

Crappy pictures. Blurred engine picture sort of rust color all over more than anywhere else. Good pictures and a “does it or doesn’t it” on a few things would be worthwhile.

Know where practically the same car sits under an attached side porch is covered in ¹/⁴ of dust, old man sits on the main porch & grins as people ride by to see it(he’s gonna restore it some day) 😆

Oh yeah! And then one day you drive by, it is gone. You stop to inquire as to it’s status, you are told the owner passed away and it was sold to a junk yard for $50.00! Strange, as the owner had been offered many times that over the years! Owner: Nope, not for sale gonna fix it up soon! Shame!

It’s actually kinda cool to see a ‘69 Mach without the obligatory Spoilers or rear window lovers. Most everyone (including myself) loves these cars with them, so it’s unusual to see one without. Cool find!

I agree with Rex Kahrs regarding the price requested.
This could very well be my storey with a 1970 Mach One I retrieved from the original owner in early 2019, after it was stored for 20 years.
After the wash, the 68k mile car presented itself extremely well and all original, like this one. However, even the floors were solid.
The local insurance company and classic car club valued mine at $40k, so is there a further problem with this 69?

Look it over good and make an offer. Good luck, from here looks a whole lot better than some of the crustaceans we have been seeing. Stay safe!!\

It’s a nice car, but there are a few pen questions that make me think the $15k price my be too high.
    1) The engine is the biggest question….how much work does it need to turn? Is it just neglect or did it seize up?
    2) The extent of the rust in the floorpans…how bad?
    3) the Engine code…the “M” is obviously the better engine

That said….if the floorpans are not rotted and the engine can turn over, maybe 12k….if not, a whole lot less….but, that’s just my basic opinion

Exhaust cutouts in rear valance indicate 4v engine.

People reaching “a certain age” can no longer enjoy these cars ? That’s insulting. I am in that category and my current ride is a torch red GT with a five speed . I make a habit of mentioning this to every State Trooper I meet in my E R if they happen to see me on the tollway maybe going a little too fast 🤭

If it has power front disc brakes & cut outs in the rear valance for dual exhaust then it is an m-code 351 &4V

Car is an M code 351. Has the correct Autolite 4300 4V carburetor. Very low price, indeed.

Nobody asked for any of these opinions, but this is still the USA, and for the time being we can still express them.

That’s the problem with Facebook Marketplace – no contact information unless the person puts it in the ad, which they hardly every do. The only way to reach them is via sending them a Facebook Message.

The seller’s name is Sherry Hunter Harrison from Cairo, GA.

I have had no luck trying to find or contact the owner. Maybe you could pass my email on to the seller and have her contact us. We are in Florida, a days drive to GA. Love to drive up and take a look!

        Thanks for any assistance!, Jay
