1969 Kaiser Jeepster Commando: $5 Rust?

left

There’s no way to know just how rusted this Jeep listed on craigslist near Knoxville really is from the pictures, but the $4,250 asking makes it sound reasonable. It is a 4X4 and looks complete except for the top and a bumper. The sheet metal is said to be in “good shape”. There’s no word on the condition of the “Dauntless” V6 or the mechanicals or of the possibility of a top. In this case “going commando” might mean you have to go topless, but at least you can wear your shorts (Sorry, could not resist that)! And in the strangest decision from a seller we’ve seen in awhile, they placed a five dollar bill over a rust spot for one of the photos, take a look at what I’m talking about below!

rust $$$

This is the first time I’ve seen a seller hold money over rust! What is he really saying? It’s only $5 worth? Is it just for size comparison? Or is he trying to imply it will only take $5 to fix? So many questions, so many possibilities and so so strange!

The $5 bill gives you an idea of how big the rust spot is … until you start grinding at it and end up with a hole twice that size before you get to clean metal.

    But anyway, it’s for scale.

Yeah, the $5 bill in the picture is odd – probably for sizing perspective, but it’s Tennessee, so who knows :). The radiator and fan in the front seat are a nice touch. These are certainly rare these days but they still haven’t achieved much in terms of collectibility so I think it’s worth a lot less than $4,250.

My dad bought a sky blue one of these back when I was 12 yrs old. We took the top off the first day and didn’t put it back till he sold it at the end of the summer… Was the coolest vehicle we ever owned…

Now, now, I’ve known some cool people from Tennessee. Seen some pretty rough parts, as well. I’m sure they just are showing the rust size compared to a bill. These were always my favorite Jeeps. Had the styling of a Jeep, ( and ruggedness) and the pluses of a car. The 225 V-6 is a bored out version of the Buick 215, with a heavier flywheel to help cancel vibrations from the odd firing V-6, Wiki sez. It was a good motor, not great, but good. (much better than the V-6 junk of today) Sadly, not many people shared my enthusiasm, as they felt, it was neither a car, nor a Jeep. What would be cool, is make it into a Hurst Jeepster clone, allegedly, the rarest Jeep known. I say a great deal.

There was one for sale here in North Alabama during the spring. It had the hardtop with it. It wasn’t a great restoration but a very nice driver. It sold for $3500.

If anyone is seriously interested, I know my Jeeps and would love an excuse to go check it out.
