1970 Mercedes 280 SL: Junkyard Find

junkyard-mercedes-280sl

When I first looked at this 1970 Mercedes 280SL, my eyes naturally went to what was sitting behind it. Notice the rack of gold, er… Porsche 356s sitting back there. Wow! This place obviously isn’t your average junkyard. In fact, I believe we did a feature on the place about two years back. The owners weren’t letting anyone in at that time, but there were rumors that some seriously rare cars were rusting away behind the gates. Well, if this is the same place, it seems that they are slowly letting the inventory trickle to market. They have already sold some 911s, but this Mercedes is the only car that they currently have listed. Find it here on eBay for $14,500 or best offer. So, do you think it’s the same yard?

Certainly is a nice array of 356s and nicely organized with the cars off the ground. Maybe the mentality is that values will always increase even though they are getting rustier by the day. $14,500 for a very rusty Unibody 280SL that has been stripped of everything seems ridiculously high to me.

Nice fire salvage. That burnt out shell of a car is going to cost a fortune to restore. You would have to be mad to even consider it.

Is it me or is 15k a little steep for a burnt out striped shell of a 450. Looks like an engine electrical fire burnt out the car and what was salvagable was striped out. My pockets aren’t deep enough to put this back together. It would be easier to restore a parts car!!! cool yard though, I’d like to have a wander through there !!

I can be sarcastic and say it’s priced just right for the crowd who’s shopping what’s behind it but seriously, what’s to save on this car? Wouldn’t the fire have ruined everything including the drivetrain? I’ll put in a disclaimer that I have zero experience with fire damaged cars except that I nearly bought an engine out of a ’55 Packard Clipper that had a fire. The fire started in the passenger compartment and the firewall worked exactly the opposite of how it’s intended. The engine and front clip was in great condition while everything behind it was…well, pretty much like you see above.
