1970 Mustang Mach I: Golden Pony

1970 Mustang Mach 1

Mustang Fastbacks have become a hot item lately and they seem to be coming out of the woodwork. This 1970 Mach 1 has been parked since the late ’70s and has only 50,000 miles. One always wonders why people park perfectly good cars. Perhaps after painting their nice white mustang gold, they were just too embarrassed to be seen driving it. The seller says he has all the missing bits and that the car runs, or at least ran within the last year. It’s a numbers matching automatic transmission car with power steering and brakes. The seller’s $11,900 asking seems like a lot of money for this. What do you think? This is going to need paint for sure. (Sorry if I’ve offended anyone who might like the gold paint). It’s for sale near Atlanta, GA, for $11,900 and listed here on Craigslist.

Another case of the 5 digit odometer being a big mistake. I’d say this car has flipped to 00000 at least a couple of times since the 70’s. I do like these though.

I feel confident voicing my opinion on this one as I have one almost identical. Right off his price is way out of line for condition, I bought ours 10 years ago for 14K and it drove stopped and was a good 20 footer, mine also is a 351 Cleveland with 2 barrel carb / auto / FMX and 9 inch rearend. I sadly say ours had the hideous ginger interior but now is black with original Chestnut Metallic BC/CC. His doesn’t have a console but maybe he removed it to install that aftermarket tape deck and he doesn’t have A/C which ours does from the factory. It is a decent car to start a project just not at that price. Also he miss stated about the ONE missing rocker molding on the drivers side actually it’s missing 2 one on door and one on quarter in front of rear wheel along with door handle. Myself I would be more interested in the 69 blue one next to this one as 69’s are more desirable with their side scoops & 4 headlights.

Really like that ginger interior and the fold down is a bonus. But this car is rough and needs a close inspection. Panels are way out of alignment and wavy and the hood may have been replaced. It has pins where twist locks were standard on the 70 Mach. And I guarantee you with that amount of surface rust there are some major rust issues elsewhere. Torque boxes, floors and rear quarters all may have some issues. I am working on a 70 Mach right now that has been garage kept since the 80s and it still had rust issues. Way over priced but I am sure he’ll hook a sucker. Having to pay someone to restore it would run you 40 – 50K and you’d end up with a 35K car. Price of entry needs to go down.
