1971 Chevy Blazer: Kept Off Road

1971 Chevy Blazer

The irony is strong with this one! A vehicle perfect for foraging rocky trails and streams has seemingly been kept off the road most of its life. This 1971 Chevy Blazer is listed here on craigslist has an asking price of $22,000 primarily due to its limited travel of only 76,000 miles. Since most of these vehicles were driven hard and put away wet, it’s unusual to see one both in stock configuration and not wearing battle scars. Of course, my favorite aspect of these original K5s was the removable hard top that was standard up until ’75 – what a great way to see the stars at night on a mountain trail! Of course, for such a capable off-road vehicle, it begs the question of how this specimen will be used, and if it will ever see a rock scramble. What would you do with it?

@ 22K you have to be kidding me. never in my wildest dreams would i consider that a fair price for this vehicle.

will it sell? i dont know. maybe that is the market but somehow i doubt it.

Seems crazy to me too! I can think of many vehicles I would rather have for this kind of money, but perhaps I am missing something here. I suppose Blazers are getting hard to find in the condition because everyone abused them when, but really?

This is right on the market, if not the low end. Early SUV’s with removable tops took a significant jump in value starting about 5 years ago. It’s all but impossible to find a Scout, early Bronco or pre-75 Ramcharger that’s in excellent restored or very good original condition for less than $20K in todays market. Some restored Scout II’s are commanding mid 30’s.

In my experience, everything is just an ask. There’s a great scene in the movie “The Rum Diary” where a developer planning to build hotels explains how you ask for a 5% increase in property taxes: ask for 8%. Counter at 7%, when the masses show up with pitchforks. Then compromise at 5% – the amount you always wanted.

I think the same holds true for some of the nuttier asking prices.

Well worth the money… These early K5’s are a lot rarer than their C10 2×4 cousins and finding one that hasn’t been rode into the ground is like finding the Holy Grail. I had a blue w/wht top one back in the late 80’s was such a cool truck, nothing like cruising at night with the full top off, unlike the 75 1/2’s and up with only the removable half top… The only thing holding this Blazer back is the color, a repaint in the classic Chevrolet Orange would really set this off, off course if your a purist don’t change the color…

Agreed. I’m sure there are more than a few folks who want to relive their youths. Some original wheels would be a nice addition as well.

I don’t know what a fair market price for this would be, but here is another low mileage one already bid to 16,000 with 4 days to go; so it might not be that stratospheric an asking price.

I call B/S on this one, no way! people who bought these drove them! a good paint job and new seat covers and carpet and a good detail/paint job underside can make anything look like “low mileage” sorry.. just sayin!

As a Ford dude I always liked the 67 to 72 C/K trucks and blazers. Like Drew said a Chevy Orange paint would make this one a whole lot cooler. I had a 68 K10 pickup that was Orange but I decided on 95 Mustang yellow when I painted it and everyone loved that truck. But IMO 15K would be tops I would pay.

I think what’s being asked is pretty close to what that thing will bring. I’d sure consider it if I had the cash. Lots of them went through the dealership I worked for and there are still a fair amount of them still running. Parts are easy to come by so one could drive one for years.

Here in Argentina we always ask the same cuestion: Does it worth that ammount of money? But then we ask a second cuestion: If you find a good base to rebuild/restore, how much it will cost? (even if you do all the work) and then a third cuestion: What are the chances to find another truck/SUV in such good/unmolested condition? I´m not saying I´ll pay it worth every penny, just ask ourselves these cuestions and see.

Juan, those are excellent questions. I’m going through something similar where I bought a good base to fix up, but it had a few more mechanical needs than I expected – but I didn’t want to pay top dollar for a car. You live, you learn.

I need to run out back and see if ours is still there… It’s a dead twin to this one, the difference being that it was kept off road for most of its life, so although has the same miles, looks a wee bit different; I don’t think it has astraight panel. CST, factory air, factory tach, factory hand throttle, my folks bought it new in Shelbyville, Ky in ’71, special ordered. The cost of options equaled the cost of the truck when new.

Well, to end all the questions and doubt of whether this beauty would bring the 22k,I can assure you that it did. I bought it in may of 2015 from Kevin O’Connell from San Carlos Ca. Worth every penny! Ive owned several of these trucks, and without a doubt this is the tightest best driving one Ive ever been in. It now shows only 78000 mi and 100% positive its correct. The originality and quality cannot be duplicated for anywhere near this price. Driven sparingly, it now rests in climate controlled storage in central Missouri.
