1971 Ford Mustang Mach I: Eleanor’s Twin

60secondsstang

When I spotted this 1971 Ford Mustang Mach I with no reserve listed here on eBay, all I could think of was Eleanor from the original Gone In 60 Seconds movie. Although this ’71 is two years older, it looks just about as rough as the well-crashed film car! Somewhere along the line, this Mach I lost its original 351 powerplant and now has an inoperable 302 in the engine bay. The original transmission is still present, as is the factory tilt steering wheel and ram air hood – but are those options desirable enough to make up for the missing motor? For me, it’s not – that engine was the heart of this car, and when new it must have been quite the looker. But for a Mustang fanatic, just knowing this car was originally a well-equipped example might be reason enough to find a replacement engine and enjoy it without worrying about trashing an all-original specimen. What would you do?

That’s not an engine, it’s only a longblock, LOL! This car has already been sold, so someone has a new project that will hopefully be completed, and ride the roads again. Here’s wishing them “deep pockets” and Good Luck! :-)

I would media blast it.Repaint as mach 1 and enjoy it.
If it runs a 302 would be good enough for me.
Never worried about all that matching numbers stuff myself.

The 302 was the base model engine for the base model Mach 1 . The optional upgrade was the base
351 2v. The next step up was the
351 4v then the 351 boss. Not many people ordered the new Mach with the 302 because of the horsepower rating of 140 hp. Closer to 220 but had to please the insurance industry with lower and less dangerous ratings. The base engine for the base Mustang was a inline 6 with a column shift 3 speed. Won’t see many of those.

Somebody already has his project, good luck as he will need it. Never been a fan of the NASA nosed Mustangs, heck I like the Mustang II’s better than the 71 to 73s. Not cutting them down for anyone else just not for me.

Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds as a 1967 Mustang Fastback dressed as a Shelby. This looks 1971 like a Ram Air 351 Mustang Mach 1. My friend had one and I drove it a lot as we swapped cars many times. His was grabber Yellow as is this one. The Ram Air 351 Cleveland with a 4 speed was a strong but squirrly runner. Loved that car!.

The original gone in 60 seconds was a 72/73 fastback. The greatest good guy / bad guy car chase scene ever!!

You’re referring to the 2000 Nic Cage remake of the movie.
