1971 Plymouth Barracuda: Hawaii Find

hawaiicuda

So, one of my fantasies is to become a car collector / flipper who roams to exotic places and finds cars hidden in plain view that no one else can find. A version of Tom Cotter, if you will, or Wayne Carini. Of course, like any desirable profession, those jobs are hard to come by. This 1971 Plymouth Barracuda here on craigslist in Connecticut is fresh off the boat from Hawaii, and is a well-optioned car with the 340 and original Shaker components included. Add in the manual transmission and included sheetmetal for the necessary rust repair and it looks like a fun project. The seller mentions he has several more cars up for sale, and given this Cuda’s original location in the Aloha State, I’m guessing this isn’t the first classic hot rod the seller has found where no one was looking. Thanks to reader Robert R. for the find!

“This is not a fire sale! No one will find any steals here!”. Now that’s a sales pitch I’ve never considered.

35K is an awful lot for a car that is such bad shape regardless of the rarity, that sunken trunk lid and other visable rust make me think hes going to own it a long time

And what’s with that tow bar..thing… Looks like something Finnegan and Frieberger would do on Roadkill!

I hope ole’ Dave likes this car because at this price, I think he may have it for awhile too. He may find that one person with the “I gotta’ have it” attitude some day and not think about how much it will take to make it a high dollar car.

I wouldn’t bother to walk across the street for a second look after seeing how that trunk hinge area has collapsed from rust, not to mention the other rust I see. This car has been repainted sometime in it’s past and the rust you can see is coming from the underside back to the surface. Check out the over spray on the hood hinges.

The 71 barracuda is about 5 mins from my house! WTH! I’ll take a drive by and scout things out to see if there is anything else floating around.

Fresh off the boat and bringing all the original Hawaii salt air rust with it. Dry storage won’t help here.

i’d have to see all the panels that are included on this deal. two quarter panels and a trunk floor aren’t going to cut it. he’d have to have $10,000. of body panels to be worth what he’s asking and to be installed to boot. they built 1000s of these small block 4 spd. cudas

Really? How much of a barn find can this possibly be? The seller couldn’t even be bothered to pull it out of the shipping container for this obvious and exorbitant flip. This ranks up there with taking pics of a newly acquired car for sale while it still sits on the trailer.

I talked to a guy at a local car show who has a similar one. 1971 Barracuda 340 Shaker 4 speed. Ordered brand new while in Vietnam. Still has it. I wish I could find a Mopar barnfind (B- or E-Body)
