1972 Chevy Suburban: Highland Plaid

1972 Chevy Suburban

The 67-72 Suburban has some really clean lines, and I like them with a little patina. This one is located in Lake Havasu City, California and is offered here on craigslist for $6,500. Being the last model year before the Suburban was facelifted to a design I don’t like as much (sorry!), it has the benefit of front disc brakes, coil rear springs and dual air conditioning (although, as usual for finds, it doesn’t work!) Originally a big block vehicle, it now has a 350/Turbo 400 combination which is said to drive well, the original engine is also included.

Chevy Suburban Plaid Seats

Wow, just look at this rare period Highlander plaid interior! With a third row of seats, minor rust and a pleasing color combination, I could go for this one! What do you think? Special thanks to Barn Finds reader offshore64guy for the find!

I had a 72 C-20 Surburban with the brown plaid interior. Good truck with a Fugly interior! Mine had a 454, Turbo 400, and a full floating axle with 3:73 gears. The rear A/C units on those things are awesome. Using an A6 compressor, the unit was capable of providing 3 tons of A/C capicity. The vehicle would pump 46F air at the vents at idle, maintaining the cab temp anywhere one wanted it. The heater, on the other hand was the single underdash unit shared with the pickups, and would only heat the front seat area, and not much else. I added an aftermarket rear heat unit, and cured that issue. We used ours as a church bus, even though it was our personal vehicle. We towed a 32 foot Holiday Rambler Presidental travel trailer with ease. Those are decent old trucks. We had no complaints with it. I have been told that in the rust belt these things rot out fast, however living in the south we did not have that issue. It would pass anything but a service station. 10 MPG bob-tail, and 5 to 7 MPG towing the TT, depending on the speed and terrain. This one looks to be in good condition, and will make a nice family cruiser.

Good solid bones but not terribly original, though are these collectible yet? Also, I can’t imagine the SBC improved the mileage significantly hauling all that mass around. Personally if I needed something like this I’d feel guilty wearing out such a nice old one and would probably end up wearing/rusting out a newer one.

Nice solid examples are getting tough to find. Aftermarket parts support for Chevy trucks is good, so most parts should not be a problem. Since this one is not original, but was born a big block truck, a 502 crate engine upgrade and sort of a street rod build will be my first choice. Make it sporty, but still able to tow a boat or a camper.

Swaping to the smaller motor makes total sense to me.454’s just make a lot of noise going between gas stations, but they are good for towing. The body is nice. It looks lowered, funky wheels and tires,Would look sweet put back stock

Very nice! Get rid of the wheels and tires, and install something more conducive to the period. Original motor and tranny, repaint, and enjoy it as the General built it.
