1976 Corvette Survivor In The UK

1975 Corvette Stingray

I love to surf eBay UK just looking at some of the interesting cars that we never got here in the States. Occasionally, I come across American classics that have made their way across the pond, but most have been there a while. Well this ’76 Corvette just recently made the journey from California all the way to Shrewsbury, Shropshire. The seller claims the car was being used as a daily driver and has the 350 V8. It has a few issues, but if you live in the UK and have been craving some American V8 fun, this Vette could be a good buy! The seller has already paid all the importation and custom fees, but it will be the next owner’s responsibility to get it to pass MOT to get it registered. I bet the next owner will have a great time rodding around in this once they have it registered! You can find this Corvette here on eBay UK with bidding at £510.00. So can any of our UK readers tell us what all it’s going to take to make this Vette street legal there?

It has a 76 steering wheel in it. And the different color seats and column is odd. I don’t remember ever seeing one like that but it is in the UK.

With petrol (as the call it in the U.K.) at around 6 bucks a gallon it would be a costly daily driver over there.

I was about to say this looks more like a 76 model, then I read the text of the ad which states that it IS a 76 year model.

The lights will need converting to UK spec. That means the headlights will need to be replaced with ones that dip to the left. The front turn signals and sidelights need to be independent from each other, so that will also need to be done. On the rear, the turn signals will need to be amber, so either the backup lights could be wired up as the turn signals with amber bulbs installed, or it is possible to get amber lenses from a UK Corvette specialist. Quite often the brakes and steering need a lot of parts replacing to meet with our very rigorous MOT standards. Hardly any play at all is acceptable in any joints. Flexi brake hoses are another area that usually fail if there is any dry-rotting of the rubber parts.

As for fuel, petrol is expensive, but cars like this are usually bought as occasional drivers over here. Our Gallon is 4.54 litres, so @ £1.13/litre that’s about $8/Imperial Gallon or $6.60ish.for your US gallon.

I understand that some US states have a version of MOT, but over here in the West we have nothing, especially for cars over 30 yrs old. t’s amazing at how much difference there is between our minimal rules & UK’s very specific set of standards. Is there any exemptions for classics? Seems all these restrictions would cause harm to even the british classics.

The UK government says that cars before 1960 don’t need a MOT, however most of the insurance companies require a road worthy certificate (MOT!).

I live in Shrewsbury and it definitely won’t be used as a daily driver over here! We’ve just had 1 months rainfall in a day.

C3’s are quite a common classic in the UK and are well priced compared to other classic American cars.

I’d love a classic muscle car but somewhere to store it and the fact I’d have to daily drive it means more modern muscle. I drive a 99′ Camaro Z28 and its gets driven all year round.

Hi everyone. Well I’m the new owner of this classic American muscle car. She now lives in Southampton Hampshire. She’s had all the work done for the MOT, next is the paint ready for the summer. I’m going to put a tan interior in her ad the current one don’t go. She will only be used in the summer and dry days only. Love it!!!!!!!!!!

The Corvette lives in a air chamber with my other classic Ford Mustang. 🇺🇸
