1978 Ferrari 308 GTS Carport Find!

This seller will not win any prizes for best photography but, if you look closely, you will see a black 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS parked in what appears to be a temporary carport. You can see it here on eBay with a starting price of $45,000.  Located in Novato, California, the vehicle appears to be a project that starts and drives but needs work.

No service records are discussed and the engine compartment appears dirty and well used.  The Ferrari 308 GTS was built from 1977-1980 and came with a 2.9 liter V8 and 5-speed manual transmission.  The GTS used a wet sump engine and were all-steel body cars.  This car is reported to have 49,000 miles on the odometer.

The interior appears rough also with a cracked steering wheel, worn seats, and a scruffy console.  I have a friend who had the opportunity to buy Johnny Cash’s all black Ferrari 308 about 15 years ago for $30,000.  I am sure this is not the same car but it is black on black.  Hopefully, it can be rebuilt better than the Cadillac in Johnny Cash’s memorable song “Once Piece At A Time!”

Ferrari 308 lines are unmistakable and look good in almost any color.  Only 3,219 GTS Ferrari 308’s were built.  Do you think this one is too far gone for a rebuild?  Maybe someone might convert it to an electric drive or fix the mechanicals and drive it as is.  With just two days left in the auction, a buyer will need to act fast or contact the seller to make a deal.

I’ll say it first: LS swap :-) More reliable with more horsepower.. clean it up and drive it.

And cut it’s value by about 80% at the same time.

      I have known many that have owned a 308 and it has been one of the most reliable cars I have ever seen. Some have been abused but if taken care of they are almost bullet proof. I have seen far worse with Corvettes Mustangs and others including Porsche. Besides it would massively screw up the balance of the car and destroy the handling which is very very good;

I recently saw a red 308 blasting up a side street in San Francisco, exhaust note bouncing between the tall buildings, and that left more of a positive impact on me than any of the half-dozen tech dudes I’ve recently seen driving new Lamborghini SUVs.

Yeah, I know this particular car would get dusted by a Camry, but there’s something really lovely about a gated-shifter Ferrari from the analog era. Black on black is a great combination, and Novato is a relatively dry area so rust may not be a huge concern.

That said, this seller’s Ebay listing is hot garbage. Bad photos, very little description other than “needs work” — but no information whatsoever on what that work will entail. Ugh.

Ya, a real Cali type. I want at least $45k but don’t want to work for it.

Why personal attacks on Cali residents? We have a great car culture here and work just as hard as you do for our money.

Even at $25K the price is high, you can find a pristine 308 for $70K-$90K

Don’t start it until you check those cam belts!! Better yet,due the full belt service first, then start it.

“Runs and drives but needs work” This applies to every Ferrari ever built.

Nice example though. About $15 to 20K over priced, unless it drives REALLY well.

Asking a lot of bucks for a 308 with little information, not too many photo’s and no
starting or driving videos. Pass as there are a lot better values in 308’s out there.

I agree with the last 3 writers, this car is way overpriced based on the going rate for 308s lately. Although the photos are not very good, I can tell by looking at the steering wheel and carpets that this car was NOT well cared for….shame….. it could be a beautiful car but not for $49k, it probably needs another $25k to make it presentable and reliable.

Please stop with the 911s and Ferrari’s or you are going have to change the name of the site to Bring a Barn Find

No VIN listed either. Relisted 2x, no bids at $49k. It’s waaaaaaaay overpriced.
