1978 Toyota Corona: Beige Wagon

1978 Toyota Corona Wagon

I don’t know why it’s the beige Japanese compacts that seem to survive in original condition. Maybe it’s reflective of the people that buy beige cars taking care of them? I’m not being judgmental, just wondering! This nice-looking Corona is located in Sackets Harbor, New York and is offered here on eBay with bidding at $1,500 but reserve not met.

Just look at that dash and upholstery! Aside from being every different shade of tan there could be, the condition is amazing. The famous 20R 4-cylinder engine means this car will be going for a lot longer than its current 68,500 miles. A manual transmission would only add to the driving enjoyment. Yes, enjoyment. The seller mentions lots of “1970’s conversations” that happen whenever it’s driven; I can certainly believe that! Any of you Barn Finds readers remember a parent or a friend’s parent having one of these?

Wow. That is in pretty amazing condition. Not cool in any way, I’m sure his kids asked him to leave it in the garage and often just walked.

Normally, I’d be really, really excited about a classic wagon in great condition – particularly with a manual transmission. In this case, unless it’s exposed to a few grains of salt, it’s likely to last forever too.

But…this otherwise lovely family wagon has absolutely zero sporting pretensions, and it’s just so freaking beige. Like every shade of beige ever created, both inside and out.

I’m sure the owner wants far more than the sub-$2K it’s been bid up to so far, and I’m sure there’s someone out there who isn’t put off by all that beige-ness, but I’m having difficulty picturing the right buyer for a very, very beige manual wagon.

I had a 79 Corona LE Wagon, 5 speed, wood paneling, kind of a cinnamon metallic and a super plush red velour interior. I bought it in 1985 at a Porsche Audi dealership in Cincinnati for $3200….. awesome shape, Ziebarted and new Michelin whitewall tires. It was a great vehicle for us. Why in the world did I sell it to buy a new 1988 Aerostar van? I must have lost my mind. When I sold it to the service manager of a Toyota dealer in Marion, Illinois it had only 59k on the clock.
