1979 Chevy Corvette: The Original Gymkhana

Gymkhana
Nowadays, when youngins’ hear the word “Gymkhana,” they immediately think of rally superstar Ken Block. He’s the guy endorsed by energy drinks who formerly drove for Subaru and now pilots rally-spec cars for Ford, occasionally compiling off-the-wall YouTube videos where he drives flat-out around an obstacle course, not entirely unlike autocross. Well, he’s not the first to make hay off the Gymkhana experience as this super low-mileage 1979 Corvette here on eBay goes to show. This car has a mere 474 miles on the clock and comes with the following: the beefed-up Gymkhana suspension (bigger sway bars, stiffer springs, HD shocks), the L82 engine and a 4-speed manual transmission. This car has already been bid to over $25,000 with plenty of time left in the auction, and if I were in the market, this is one I’d consider. Great colors, great options and more special than another anniversary or pace car edition. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Jason D. for sending it in!

No, I didn’t, because it’s in “quotes” not (parentheses) but even so, I guess I still don’t get it.

Oh god… another ‘ultra rare’ low mile Vette. No, it’s a ’79 with dealer miles. It’s not rare, and the Gymkhana was a popular option. If it winds up in a museum for some reason, great. If not, the new owner should expect to replace every single piece of rubber, including the window seals, in order to drive it.

Nice car. Climate controlled thought does not keep seals such as rear mains, etc. from drying out. I purchased a ’66 Nova Sport Coupe years ago with 60K original miles on a 283 engine and PG transmission under similar circumstances. I had to replace all the transmission and engine seals.

Yep, close to 54K units, selling even more than current production models.

I recently bought an L-82 .1,432 made that year . Just over 1,200 made with the Gymkhana option. Given that there were 54,000 made that year . I’d say that the Gymkhana L-82 may be … somewhat , rare? Lucky mine has 82,000 miles and everything already freshened up .
