1981 BMW 635CSI: Cheap Euro Model?

635euro

Barn Finds reader Tony D. spotted what could be a Euro-market BMW 6-Series here on craigslist for only $700! Some of the tell-tale signs are there, with the obvious one being the slimmer European bumpers. What gets me really excited is that the front fenders don’t have the ugly US-DOT sidemarkers drilled in (the rear quarters didn’t escape this fate), usually a good sign that this car is a gray market example and may be equipped with the rare dogleg transmission. Someone has attempted bodywork at some point, which isn’t surprising given the propensity the E24-series coupes have for rust. But for $700 and an available parts car, parting out both could be a nice profit for someone with time and space, especially if one of the two cars’ interior contains sport seats, a sport steering wheel and other Euro-specific bits.

It has a trailer hitch? Haven’t seen that before.

It’s for pulling a small sailboat!

I believe the front turn signals are visible from the side, hence the no additional side markers. The 635CSI in ’81 was def. gray market, the US was the 633CSI, with the smaller 3.3 engine. The 635 had a good portion more power. I never thought these cars would get so cheap. I am glad I never talked myself into getting one.

Looks kinda nice, except for the trailer hitch. Wonder what they pulled?

Those metric wheels are worth scrap. I had an 88 with the metric wheels. You couldn’t buy the tires anymore so I swapped it over like this owner did. Covering the rocker panels with the wheels is probably so you don’t see the rust.

I wonder why they drove into a grassy field?

Very cool. I’m amazed it’s so cheap. Th E24 is loved very much in the BMW community.
