1984 Mercedes 500 SEC Lorinser Edition With 12k Miles!

As the one-time choice of Formula One drivers the likes of Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost, and Niki Lauda, Lorinser’s improved Mercedes-Benz models earned a reputation for capabilities beyond MB’s already-excellent factory performance. This 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC Lorinser Edition in Wylie, Texas covered a measly 20,266 km, only 12,592 miles! Though paint and some plastics are faded by the Texas sun, many parts of the car and undercarriage look remarkably fresh. The Buy It Now price of $8900 here on eBay, reduced from $10,800, makes this a low-production Supercar that nearly anyone can afford.

Though not started in decades, the 500 SEC wears new tires on the sadly basic-looking wheels… ready for the trailer or shipper of your choice. I can’t believe the original owner chose these wheels, but fitting some fatter ’80s-style rolling gear will be easy for the buyer. No chrome 22s, please!

While the seats (front and rear) clash with the camel interior, I wonder if it’s simply due to how the different materials aged in the sun. The tidy interior supports the low-mileage claim. Would-be buyers would be wise to check out the details and pitfalls of about these fine cars at 500sec.com.

For the love of all things holy, please don’t throw a battery in this Benz and twist the key. A vehicle of this caliber deserves methodical preparation on its road to recovery. Quadruple horns suggest one method to prod aside cattle… or left lane bandits. The AMG-style grille looks rather common today but, in the ’80s, seeing one in your rear view mirror also served as a prompt to briskly signal and yield. Considering its baked paint and long-idled mechanicals, the asking price may yet need some adjustment. What would you give for this forgotten low-mileage high-roller?

I wondered about that. I also wonder how much of this car is from Lorinser beyond the body kit. Though the car appears to be a Euro- or Canadian-spec car (with U.S. headlights in some photos), I would think those Wylie (wily?) Texans would be a bit more forthcoming if Lorinser had provided any engine/chassis mods.

Handle with extreme care, is what I say.

In the Mercedes community that interior color is known as “Pinkomino”.
It is a result of the original Palomino leather dye changing color under the UV light.

Always wanted one after wheeler dealers did one up nicely. It was a proper motor when they got done with it.

I’ve owned several versions of this car. Repairs can far exceed their asking price given that it has not run for such a long time. It also needs a total repaint. I would not pay more than $3-5k subject to a PPI.

These came with the expensive Lorinser wheels. Someone sold them off and put on stock ones. Otherwise, a good deal.
