1984 VW GTI: $900 Runner

gti_a

Here’s a very cheap MK1 VW GTI that still runs and comes with a boatload of spare parts, including a replacement interior. Available for $900 here on craigslist in Ohio, it will require repair to the hard fuel lines and rust damage in the driver’s floor to be better suited for daily driver duties – easy projects for a car that deserves to be preserved for the long haul. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Rich G. for the find.

The GTI is in an unusual spot price-wise at the moment. The show-stopper, museum quality cars are fetching decent money, but the more tired examples are still very cheap to buy. This is a good thing, because the increase in price for the high-end models usually spells a pending increase for rough cars. A rising tide lifts all boats, if you will. For now, MK1’s like this rare red example are still up for grabs without breaking the bank.

The interior is one of the car’s worst features, but the seller is including a set of factory sport seats in great condition. The rest of the interior isn’t terrible, but the hole in the driver’s side floor has likely caused dampness to saturate the carpet. I’d replace it regardless, and look for a knee bolster panel for under the steering column. Although I’m a fan of the all-red interiors, the classic striped blue fabric pattern is MK1-correct.

The 1.8L engine is not overly detailed, and the car has no exhaust past the header. As mentioned, the leaking hard fuel lines will need to be fixed, and the seller is including shifter bushings to address the sloppy gear change. Some suspension and chassis upgrades have already been made, including poly bushings and upgraded shocks and springs (though I would prefer H&R/Bilstein over the installed Tokicos). Rear disc brakes from a Jetta GLI round out the enhancements, but there’s plenty more to do – where would you start if this was your project?

These were fast little cars for the period, I remember back in the mid 70’s my sister drove one as a pizza delivery vehicle in Plano, Texas. I’d like to have one of these just for giggles, and great fuel mileage as well.

For the price, i’d give it a shot. That episode of “Wheeler Dealers” is playing in the back of my mind.

If my truck and trailer weren’t both such total shit, I’d have this hauled home by now!

The US-spec alloy wheels would go down well here in the UK !. Very popular car here and sell for top price ,as said by Monsieur le Baton. If that paint is Mars Red too,all the better !!.
