1st Year Bay Window: 1968 VW Type 2

If you follow aircooled trends at all, you’ve undoubtedly seen the early Buses going for big money. I feel fairly confident in telling you that the next one to spike will be the worker editions – the flat-panels, no glass, pickup bodied VWs that are seemingly just as rare. This first-year Bay Window here on craigslist is listed for $8,200, and while it does have plenty of rust, none of it appears terminal.

Yes, I realize the extent of surface rust is to the point that it needs to be addressed with proper metalwork. But at the same time, we’re not seeing too many large holes in the body and it appears to have never been hacked up for some sort of rudimentary conversion after its years as a useful work truck had passed. The original hubcaps are still present along with those sweet fold-down panels.

The inside of the cab looks even better, with a nearly-new dash and clean upholstery. It’s surprising to not see a cracked dash pad and torn seats, and it may indicate that it led a gentle life despite being left outside. The steering wheel rim looks freshly recovered, and the only major strike against it I see are the cut-outs for speakers in the door panels. The seller notes all of the glass is intact as well.

The engine is not original, but that’s not a bad thing in this case: it’s a later dual-port motor that’s received a fresh tuneup and is said to drive well. There’s only 132K miles on the body, which likely has a lot to do with why the interior is so nice. I do spy some wetness on the engine case, so perhaps a phone call or two is needed to confirm how dry the engine is or isn’t. Does anyone else believe these worker-bodied VWs are the next Bus to see a jump in value?

I would love to make this really nice and use it for hauling my dune bike. just for show, like paint it the same colors.
but that’s just a dream i hope someone will bring it back completely.

Seen worse become street worthy. Not alot of candidates to choose from. Price isn’t too crazy if it’s what you want.

Ahhh…Such a reminder for me. Living in Atlanta 25 years ago, I bought one of these at a used car lot. Paid half up front, $400. A week later, I headed up to the lot to pick it up when I actually watched it pass me by going the opposite direction. On up to the lot I went…”they said it was getting a tune up and would be back later. I left and came back the next day, and the lot was mostly cleared, the sales force gone, and about 5 police cars there. Apparently I was not the only loser that day. Has anyone seen mine? Ran when stolen… Happy Day BF peoples !!

No offense but your prediction is a little late.

Panels, Single and Double Cabs had their upswing years ago now. They’ve been the hot ticket for at least five years.

Type 2 were always hard riding. This one could still be used to haul bus parts.
