20K Mile Survivor: 1978 Ford Mustang II

It’s hard to believe that there are so many nice cars still out there in the real world, whether they’re high-powered muscle cars, old trucks, or cars like this 1978 Ford Mustang II. Of course, nice doesn’t mean inexpensive and this 1978 Ford Mustang II is already at $10,100, listed here on eBay. It’s located in Danville, Virginia. Thanks to Larry D. for sending in this tip!

It gives me hope of finding a nice car the next time I have an empty space for one. That’s why I like motorcycles, it’s much easier to hoard/store a few in the space around a car, or in the same space that a car would need in a garage or storage unit. We’ve seen a lot of Mustang IIs here over the years but this one hits me as being one of the nicest.

Those bumpers, though, ouch. Other than those diving platforms, I think the Mustang II is a nice design. The T-Tops on this example really make it a desirable car as seen with the bid price already being over Hagerty’s #2 excellent condition value of $8,900. Their #1 Concours value is $11,700 and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that number crushed at the end of this auction. Some folks have mucho expendable income to throw at vintage cars out there that’s for sure, wow. This is, of course, a hatchback rather than a notchback car and it’s no surprise that it looks great back there.

The seller mentions that this car has had one repaint in the 1990s so that always raises the question of whether it’s a true “survivor” or not, but other than that, everything else is original. You can see that this is a put-it-in-D-and-go car as it has an automatic transmission but it doesn’t appear to be holding down the price. The interior looks fantastic front and rear, a true preservation miracle. The underside also looks like it’s been well-preserved.

The engine and engine compartment are clean and the seller says that this Ford 2.8L V6 runs great and they would not hesitate to jump in and drive this car anywhere. When new it was good for about 90 horsepower so you’ll be going a bit slower than if it would have had the 302 V8 but this is a weekend cruiser with those T-Tops, not a road-burner. Any thoughts on this Mustang II?

I have to admit, the interior of the home in the link that you supplied is unreal. I’ve never seen anything like it, straight out of 1979 but styled like the 60s. The Radar Range microwave, Mr Coffee, wall ovens, and trash compactor all appear as new.

The digs are far out, man!

Very nice. Obviously the car has been babied all its life. With the white paint and white interior and whitewall tires and lacy spoke wheels, it presents itself as very “clean.” The T-tops do give it a sporty vibe, but otherwise there is no pretense of it being any sort of muscle car, like Scotty notes. Just enjoy it for what it is. It will bring solid bucks.

The blank areas on the gauge panel always bothered me about these, they coulda did fake vents or something…nice car though…damn the haters….

The car and the house up above should go together but now we’re talking REAL money. The 1970s never ended, I guess but I’m not sure that’s a good thing.

I confess to some fascination with the Mustang II. By inclination I consider myself a Mopar person but when I met my wife she had a 66. We have since owned or own a 88 LX 5.0, a 2005 V6, and a 2018 GT. A II would bring the collection closer to full. Also, as a kid, I thought the II was a cool looking car. That was before I knew much about cars but that kid is still around.

Are Mustang II’s really $10K+ cars nowadays? Alot to pay for nostalgia and a slow car.

Who cares? It’s in beautiful shape. Can’t you appreciate something that isn’t built to compensate for someone’s insecurity?

You are right. Back in the 70’s I had one. Girls loved to ride in it. Im assuming thats what you meant. After all a real man or not would depend only about his character.

Beautiful looking car. Although not what some people would consider desirable, or a collector car, I’ve always loved the Mustang II.

Cool house with pool for 450k in California, why so cheap?

It’s a townhouse and shares a wall with another, plus there’s almost $7k/year in HOA fees, not really a bargain.
Interior is wacky though! I kind of like it.

Well, it’s a townhouse with HOA fees over $500 monthly and it has carpet in the bathrooms just to start a list. It is so outrageous that it requires a very specific buyer. I think that it is awesome, but I have absolutely zero desire to live in the Peoples Republic of California.

Gorgeous car! Much better looking Mustang than that which would follow it.

I always liked the Mustang II, and for some reason, (IMO) the color matched bumpers don’t look nearly as bad, or stand out as much as the “chromed railroad ties” the other Ford products of the ’70’s were saddled with.
    GLWTA!! :-)

never saw one w/T top’n hatch. Clever.
Most of us were disappointed when the dwn sz came. Some went on & did the same they’d do to any new car – hop up. Seemed heavy fora small car.

Today, there’s younger-than-me folk. Some who came up w/these. Since ’05 I have bought low, tinkered, sold hi w/these fox additions. There is a growing market for these. I did not fashion the ‘modelA’ my dad liked. The ‘eras” march on. Jon/ed/jc may not know that. These have buyers over 50 aged as target (right age, right $) but I’ve seen early 30s go for them too.
My bud (my girl fr’s girl fr’s hubby) had one of the 200K made above yr. Of those I’m sure he had one of the 90K fastbacks made in white w/the blue stripes. How he ever got his hands down inside the 302’s engine bay I’ll never know. Nor the exorbitant 4K$ one cost back then…
    aahahahaa

These cars were garbage when new and no amount of recycling is going to change it

She’s up to $12,600 with a day left. Gotta love it. There is certainly something about her, easily the best looking Mustang II that I have ever seen, and I am generally not a fan.

I had one when I was 18, v6 4 speed, great fun little mustang. It wasn’t the most powerful thing out there but I had mine painted up looking great. I must say it took a beating well !

It appears that she sold for $15,100. Someone sure got a pretty, albeit slow and hot, new pony.
