25k Genuine Miles: 1977 Oldsmobile Toronado

Barn Finder Pat L has a great eye for spotting the interesting, the unusual, and the downright cool, and has definitely come up trumps with this Toronado. Thanks so much for that Pat. With only a claimed 25,000 miles on the clock, this Toronado is a great looking car that appears to be in nearly flawless condition. If you can see yourself as the next owner of this Oldsmobile, you will find it located in Des Moines, Iowa, and listed for sale here on Craigslist.

When it was introduced, the Toronado was a ground-breaking car. For the large part, front-wheel drive had been the preserve of small economy cars, but Oldsmobile came along and proved that you could push reasonable horsepower to the road via the front wheels without a lot of drama. This ’77 model continues that trend, and the fwd layout opened up new realms of interior space never before experienced in a car of this size. This car presents exceptionally well. The Brown Metallic paint looks really solid and clean, and the tan landau top is also close to faultless. There are a couple of very minor marks on the car, but the owner feels that a trip to your local paintless dent removal specialist will take care of these.

It is under the hood where the Toronado really made its mark and really set the American car industry talking. A V8 engine driving through the front wheels was basically unheard of, and this car continues that trend. This is a 403ci V8 which sends its power to a 3-speed automatic transmission. This car also brings power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning to the party. The engine bay looks close to perfect, and the owner says that the car starts, runs, and drives perfectly and that it is an effortless highway cruiser.

Things inside the car continue the trend set by the exterior and the engine. It’s basically spotless in here. The only box on the options list that the original owner didn’t tick was the one for leather seats. otherwise, it’s all here. Power windows, power seats, power locks, tilt wheel, AM/FM stereo, and cruise control. They’re all here, and they all work. Nothing to do but sit back and enjoy yourself.

The owner of this ’77 Toronado has set the price at $13,500. There’s no doubt that the price is above what you would normally expect to pay for a Toronado of this vintage, but the condition of this particular car seems to be well above average. If the owner can verify the mileage claim, then this car could well be worth the asking price.

Good looking car! I had a ’67 and a ’83 Toronado, loved both. Of course, with the ’83 I had the typical headliner and bumper filler issues. I wonder if the fillers have been replaced on this one. They appear in excellent condition. Anything is only worth what someone would pay for it, and I’d fork over the $13,500 if I had a place to keep it inside.

The were very nice cars, but we’re always second in styling to the Riviera. The front end never did look as nice on the 79-85 as it did on the Riv’s. But 77-78 Toronado’s were nicer than the Lesabre lookalike Rivieras. Seems like a nice vehicle although a liitle pricey. These we’re great highway cruisers.

A couple more boxes to check off would have been XSR wrap around window, T tops or sunroof.

I like the loose pillow look…Lincoln offers loose pillow leather.

The T Tops were not available Sam61, nor was the XSR. The XS with the sunroof and wrap around rear window was what went into production. XSR power T Tops was a prototype. The two prototype XSRs known to exist are in a private museum today.

Leather was not an option on the 77 Toronado, it was offered in 78. 77 had this beautiful striped pillow velour in tan, red, green, blue, black or a white vinyl option with contrasting carpets and dash. It’s not loaded as you say Adam, no tilt/tele wheel, no automatic lights, or automatic climate control, no 8 Track, or sunroof and it’s not an XS model but yes sir, it’s a beautiful Toronado.

Great cars! I had an ’85 307 – 4 Barrel. Last of the Q-Jets. Great Cruisher and knocked down 25 mpg highway. My GPa bought it new.
