1974 Plymouth Barracuda Project

Almost every car enthusiast recognizes then lines of a 1970-1974 Plymouth Barracuda. This car is for sale here on eBay with 2 days remaining in the auction. Having already garnered 8 bids, the reserve has not been met with bids up to $10,400. The 1974 Plymouth Barracuda is located in Moores Hill, Indiana.

The Barracuda is powered by a 318 cubic inch V8 engine that delivered 155 horsepower in its factory form. The seller states that the engine is modified with 340 cubic inch V8 heads and backed by a Street Fighter II automatic transmission. There are some dress up goodies on the engine, including an old school Weiand air cleaner.

As with the exterior, this car is going to need work but looks like it could be a running project. The car appears to have a Hurst dual gate shifter mounted in the console. The seats are split on the seams but the rest of the interior looks like it could be cleaned up. The lower body panels show rust through and the trunk pan is toast.

The odometer reportedly shows 132,000 miles and has a new gas tank and gas lines installed. A buyer would probably prefer some pictures of the underside of the car to see how solid the frame is. While it doesn’t have the most powerful engine, this Barracuda could be a great car for your next build.

Personally, I feel that this car is going to need at minimum, quarter panels and trunk floor replacement, and a possibly difficult to find front grille. No under carriage pictures, a transmission of “hearsay” origins, and it hasn’t met the reserve yet. If the rust you can see is bad, then there’s more that you can’t see. There’s potential here, but the price of entry coupled with costs of repair will (IMO) push this into a labor love.

Time you replace most of the sheet metal paint it and buy all the interior pieces and if you do most of the work yourself it would cost 30k or more to restore this car. If this was a 1970 or 71 it might be worth it.

Rusty barracuda’s from this 74 are definitely not as popular as the earlier version!! It could be made into anything you want ripping out the 318 and going the 383 or 440 route!! Me personally I go with a more modern hemi with a five speed and really make it go!!! The price point needs to stay where you don’t end up with 100,000 into a 30 thousand dollar car!!

I Really don’t get you guys and your estimate on the cost of doing this car. Some said 30 gran if you do it yourself (plus the cost of the car?), wow. Now perhaps mopar parts are a little more than 69 Camaro parts but I would not think that much more. My 69 Camaro started out in similar condition as this one. I replaced every piece of sheet metal except for the hood, replaced the trunk floor and used Nason base coat clear coat. Did all the work myself, it’s not a show car but a good driver quality and came in under $1,200. Built a 350 cid had a local shop do the interior and when it was all said I spent a little over 10 grand and this is today prices as I just finishes the paint this year. The difference is I payed 4 grand for my Camaro 15 years ago and this Barracuda is probably go for 13 to 15 grand so maybe you come in at around 25 to 27 grand for everything, but you would have a really nice driver quality Morpar.

Everyone has their own idea what driver quality is.

I agree that some ridiculous estimates show up on here at times, but just curious
when you say every piece except hood, is that Front fenders ,door skins, rear quarters, Front and rear valances, Rockers and a trunk lid along with the trunk floor for that $1200?

$1200 seems a little low. I am in the middle of a 65 Corsair project now. I only purchased a few patch panels for the body, resealing the eng. replacing all the rubber parts and buying paint & primer I am already over $3000. The interior kit was purchased before I got it. I expect before I’m done I’ll be around $5000 all in. I got the car for nothing so am not uncomfortable with these #’s.

Too highly valued in the 1st place for a car heading to clone-dom. When done, it will be too costly for anyone but a 1%’er to buy.
