32k Original Miles: 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Sedan

This 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is a nicely presented car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed. With only 32,500 miles on the odometer and a V8 under the hood, it should have plenty of life left in it for the next owner. The Cutlass is located in Morgantown, Pennsylvania, and is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding on the Olds has reached a very modest $2,650, and I’m not surprised that the reserve hasn’t been met.

The combination of Sienna paint and the Sandlewood vinyl top give the Cutlass a great look. This is really helped by the color-matched factory rally wheels and chrome beauty rings. The paint on the Oldsmobile isn’t original, as the car has undergone a repaint at some point in the past. The owner provides a good collection of photos, and apart from what looks like a small area of rust in the lower fender on the passenger side, the rest of the car appears to be clean and solid. The external chrome and trim also look good, as does the glass.

Under the hood is the 180hp version of the Oldsmobile 350ci V8, which sends the power to the Posi rear end via a TH-350 transmission. The presentation of the engine bay is clean for an original and unrestored vehicle of this age. It looks like the car has recently received a new master cylinder and brake booster, so those 4-wheel drum brakes should be working at their best. The owner doesn’t actually mention how well the car runs and drives, but he does state that it comes with a significant collection of documentation. This includes the original Window Sticker, along with comprehensive service and maintenance records.

The interior of the Cutlass presents quite nicely, but the first thing that jumped out me is the fact that it appears that the base of the front seat has received a new cover at some point. The color of this doesn’t seem to quite “gel” with the rest of the Sienna interior trim, and I don’t think that it’s a trick of the light. Once again, the owner provides plenty of photos, and apart from that color mismatch, it is quite hard to fault the inside of the car. It has been fitted with a CD player, but this is mounted under the dash, so no holes have been cut, and the original radio is still in place. While the Cutlass isn’t overflowing with luxury appointments, factory air conditioning should make life fairly pleasant on those warmer days.

Varying shades of brown featured strongly on cars of the 1970s and early 1980s, and while some people like them, others don’t. I fit into the former category, especially if the brown is a darker shade. It tends to emphasize the external chrome and trim, which can really make a car sparkle. That effect is achieved with this car, and the vinyl top improves it even further. There isn’t much that is obviously wrong with the Cutlass, and the condition should make it really stand out wherever it goes.

That’s a cool cruiser. They might have been throwaways in their day and even 20 years ago but all cars of this vintage are uncommon now, so the “to[sic] many doors” crowd can scroll right on by.

Very nice car in very nice shape. Of note, the A/C has no belt so, will it blow cool or has the compressor fried? I have never seen a new master and booster in silver, ever. I also see silver spray paint on the vacuum hose to the booster and on both brake lines, odd. Maybe they rebuilt it and just sprayed it silver to look new?
Neither is an issue if the price is right. Lots of miles and smiles left in this “Merry Oldsmobile”.

Theoretically this should sell for way, way less than an otherwise identical 2 door HT and provide someone with a nice, low priced entry into the classic car world. But the fact that it resides at an “auto mall” tells me the reserve won’t be reasonable.

All the saved ones are 2 door hard tops and a dime a dozen.

These were not saved and one like this is probably worth more

Nice to see a well-preserved 4 door for a change. As Fred W said, this is a car that gets you into the hobby a lot cheaper than the much more common 2 door. While I’m not a big fan of brown, the white vinyl roof is a nice contrast and the interior is stunning. Apparently needing nothing, the new owner can just get in and enjoy it.

Hopefully, considering the condition and low miles, the final bid will satisfy the seller and this beauty will find a new home.

It’s another and elegant member of the Ultimate Driver’s Group.
You can’t go wrong here, it will be a good value provided the price doesn’t escalate unreasonably and a car you can enjoy.
Someone buy this. I have no room.

Sweet looking 1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme sedan. I’ve seen 71 Cutlass Supreme before, but never a 4 door hardtop.

Growing up in the Northern VA area there was a car rental place in the early ’80s called Classic Car Rental. The ONLY cars they rented were 4 door ’70-’72 Cutlass Supremes like this (which at that time were about 10 years old), and they all rented for $9.95/day.
