355/4-Speed: 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Pat L sent this clean 1979 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 that is for sale in Saint Johns, Michigan to us. It is black with an oyster cloth interior. The engine appears to be significantly modified which would make rowing through the 4-speed transmission a lot of fun. The Z28 is also equipped with T-Tops and a 3.73 rear differential. The Camaro is listed here on craigslist for an asking price of $18,500. If the car is rust-free, this seems like a really good price and won’t last long.

It is kind of rare to see a Z28 without a center console. The interior of this car is very nice. The neutral oyster interior looks clean and appears to be in great shape. The owner added aftermarket gauges that sit under the dash in front of the shifter. The ad states that the car has 45,000 miles. I am not sure if that is the miles on the car or just on the drivetrain. The Z28 is optioned with power steering, power brakes, and power locks.

The factory 350 engine has been modified or replaced with this built 355 cid motor. The engine is fed through a Demon 4 barrel carburetor and an aluminum high rise intake manifold. The engine has headers, aftermarket MSD ignition, and an aftermarket air cleaner. The seller states that the car also has new tires and new shocks. There is not much of a description about the engine but it also has aluminum heads.

The red and orange stripes really stand out against the black paint and match the orange traction bars that sit beneath the rear leaf springs. I remember running against a lot of Z28’s in high school with stock engines against my Trans Am. I am glad I didn’t run with this guy because I would have been lucky to catch his tail lights as he pulled away. The car may not have much top end but it should pull well off the line.

The ad is gone but it appeared to be an interesting car.

Nice looking car with what appeared to be well thought out and executed modifications, no wonder it sold quickly.

I had a ‘79 and a ‘80: many years ago. They are really fun to drive, not powerful but enjoyable to cruise around in.

Only a fool would pay 18k for a late 70’s Camaro or Trans Am.
