4-Speed Project: 1980 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

The third owner is selling this 1980 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with only 81,941 miles showing on the odometer. The seller states that the second owner had the car since the early 1980’s and stored the car for the past 25 years. The car is listed for sale here on eBay with an auction that ends in on Sunday around 6:30 pm EST. With 11 bids entered on eBay, the car is bid to $9,000 and it looks like the reserve has been met. The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is located in Martinsville, New Jersey.

If the faded paint on the black and gold Z28 doesn’t tell the story of how the car was neglected, the engine compartment does. The Camaro Z28 is fitted with a 350 cubic inch V8 engine backed by a 4 speed Borg Warner T-10 manual transmission. The 350 cubic inch V8 engine was the only engine option available in 1980. This LM1 5.7 liter engine produced a pedestrian 185 horsepower and 280 lb ft of torque from the factory. These engines need modifications but it is inexpensive to make them fun to drive.

The interior of this car is the best part. The tan vinyl interior looks almost new except for the cracked dash. This Camaro Z28 is optioned with power windows, power locks but does not have air conditioning. The car does have T-Tops which became available on the Camaro in 1978. The seller says the car has been tuned up and purrs like a kitten. I would rebuild the brakes and fuel delivery system before I did too much driving in this car.

The second generation Camaro was produced from 1970 to 1981. The 1980 and 1981 Camaro Z28’s were fitted with air induction hood scoops that actually worked. The flapper on the rear side of the scoop opened under full throttle to let cool air into the air cleaner. As seen above, the driver fender and front spoiler are damaged. This car has the optional aluminum wheels that look great with this black and gold paint scheme.

The black/tan combo is killer! Too bad its a t-top car or else I’d be all over this like gravy on potato! Working on the engine of these is a PITA. Anyone ever try to remove those air injection tubes? Good luck!

Is it just me or is this a dark brown Z28 and not black?

I am always amused when people post ads with “only 80,000” for this era of car. Cars made in the 70’s and 80’s were generally good for around 60k miles before needing a complete refresh (all new brakes, control arm bushings, heads and carb rebuilt, etc, etc). Sure there are a few people who got 150k or even 200k out of a 1980’ish built car but they were likely all highway miles or they maintained the heck out of it.

@randy, I agree. It stuck out for me with this car. 80k is nearing the end of the road for many cars from this era. I sent an 87 Dodge to the junkyard with 82k
In today’s milage, this Camaro had the equivalent of around 150k

Why does a 1980 vintage car that was supposedly stored have such corrosion all over everything in the engine compartment? And what about that giant rot hole in the rear body panel? $10,900? No A/C, No thanks.

Dude probably laid an 80k mile stripe of wheezy 180 horse one-wheel peel, it’s totally clapped out from a hard life! What a depressing fossil of someone’s old glory
