409 V8 4-Speed! 1964 Chevrolet Impala

This 1964 Chevy Impala Sport Coupe is an exceptionally clean automobile that has likely been restored, although the seller makes no such reference. It has Chevy’s fabled 409 cubic inch V8 under the hood, paired with a 4-speed. These were typically seen in the Super Sport model, but this is one of the cases when it could be ordered with virtually any full-sized Chevrolet. Located in Waterford Township, Michigan, this vintage hot rod is available here on craigslist for $55,000. Hats off to Barn Finder Pat L. for uncovering this great tip for us!

While Chevrolet’s record sales year wouldn’t come until 1965, 1964 was no slouch. The big news in the Impala camp that year was that the Super Sport was promoted to series status, something it would maintain through the end of the decade. That year, nearly 167,000 SS Sport Coupes were built alongside another 442,000 “regular” Impala Sport Coupes. But just 8,700 copies had the 409 V8 with most – but not all – of them being in the SS. So. This non-SS 409 may be a rarer find.

We’re told that the ’64 Impala here is numbers-matching, so the 409 and 4-speed have been in the car since Day 1. Besides power steering and brakes, this Chevy also has factory air conditioning which wasn’t a typical option with that big engine. The seller says the car runs and drives great but provides zero history on the automobile except that the odometer has collected 80,000 miles.

The body, paint, and interior look squeaky clean, so if this is a restoration it appears to have been done well. Nicely detailed, the engine compartment is practically clean enough to eat off. The only things that may not be stock are the wheels which look good on this full-size cruiser in white. Perhaps the seller is a dealer as we’re told that trades will be accepted.

Looks like the mild 409 1 4 bbl hydraulic lifters still a nice car.

While it shouldn’t come as a surprise it’s obvious it received a respray some time as the hood is body color on its underside – US built Chevs had satin black underside (and firewall) while Canadian cars still wore body color. It’s a nicely optioned ‘pala however it’s interesting that it’s also only equipped with a 1spd wiper – the washer resorvoir appears to serve as coolant catch can here

Nice ’09! Personally I like 62 Chevy’s more, but a 64 as pretty as this one could change my mind.

It appears to be the milder 340 horse version, that was first offered in 63. Unlike the solid lifter 400 and 425 horse versions, the hydraulic lifter 340 could be ordered with power steering, air conditioning and the Powerglide automatic.

My uncle bought a white/blue interior brand new. Three on the tree. 327. The youngest uncle got it in 73 when he got drivers license. He came over and we searched the couch for change, the top of washer always had change We found about $2 for gas and drove around all night lol

Love everything about it except the price. I can’t help but think that the days where people are willing to fork out $55,000 for cars like this are quickly running out…

Every time you have a 64 Impala show up I get sad. During my High School years I had 2 64 SS Impalas, and oh how I wish I had them back. Yeah, one was the lowly 283, but the other was a 327 with the 4 barrel carb. Both were the old 2 speed slush box trannies. But, if I had them now, they would be worth way over what I paid for them back in 69-71. Sigh. Very nice looking car, but a far cry from the 2K for the 283, and 2.5K for the 327…. Sigh…..

A GREAT combination bench seat, 4 speed, built in Tac, and the icing on the cake air conditioning. Have a red 63 with air and it’s a fun cruiser.
