40K-Mile 1984 Chevrolet S-10 Durango 4×4

This 1984 Chevrolet S-10 Durango 4×4 pickup has only traveled 40,000 miles over the last thirty-eight years which is pretty amazing. I drive that much every year and that low mileage appears to have really preserved this golden nugget. The seller has this time machine 4×4 listed here on eBay in Cleveland, Tennessee, there is no reserve, and the current bid price is $11,700.

General Motors made the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15, which were the first American-made small pickups. That’s hard to believe now, but the other compact trucks to wear American badges were captive imports, such as the Ford Courier or the Chevrolet LUV, which preceded the Chevy S-10. The first-generation Chevrolet S-10 was made from late 1981 for the 1982 model year until the end of 1993.

Chevrolet offered three different wheelbase lengths for the S-10 of this era, 108.3-inches, 117.9-inches, and this extended cab model has a wheelbase of 122.9-inches. The extended cab S-10 has a shorter 73.1-inch bed length but buyers of the regular cab S-10 had a choice of the shorter bed or an 89-inch bed. This truck has a Durango trim package and even though there aren’t any underside photos, the seller took a photo with the tailgate down to show us what the bed looks like.

They do say that this S-10 has been a Tennessee truck since new and that it’s “rust-free”, which I have to assume doesn’t include any minor surface rust that may be on the underside just from being on the planet for 38 years. The interior appears to be in great condition with a nice bench seat and what looks like a solid dash. They say that it has almost new tires and a brand new exhaust system and they show some speakers behind the seat.

The engine is Chevrolet’s 2.8-liter V6 which was rated at 115 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. It’s backed up by an automatic transmission. The seller says that it runs and drives great and this truck has never been abused. It sure looks like a gem to me, have any of you owned a first-generation Chevy S-10?

I have to admit I really thought the “Durango” in the title was going to be a tongue in cheek reference to a seller misprint, but I have been proven wrong! I didn’t know that trim existed for these and this one looks nice. I remember when these were everywhere in various configurations…until they weren’t anymore. I suspect Cash for Clunkers wiped many of these away.

In the northeast most of these ’80s ones rusted out before the mid ’00s.

I’m still driving my 93 S-10 Tahoe, and I’m always getting asked if it’s for sale! The “small” Colorado/GMC twin that GM brought out as a return is much larger, and not nearly as right sized as these were. The 2.6 V-6 also proved to be rather gutless; w/ the 4.3 being a much better engine. This appears to be a well kept truck. GLWTA!! :-)

I’m still driving my 93 Ford Ranger. And people always ask me if it’s for sale. Even when I at a stop light! lol

I had one completely identical to yours, only with the original wheels. Loved it and had many trouble free years until the NH salt got to it. Wish I could find another.

I’m sure attracted to these sort of generic looking all original specimens. To find any of these in original unrestored condition and not rusty and beat is simply amazing.

I’ve got enough to keep me busy but I sure hope this goes to a home that will preserve it

A bench seat with no headrest , wow the stuff the makers got away with because of the truck laws
Now , this thing is dangerous
    But
    I still like it

Nice! This is the truck that tried to kick the Asians in the nads,,aye, but t’was too late. Toyota already had their foot in the door. Since I almost never buy foreign vehicles( British the only exception and I don’t consider them “foreign”) I, like many others that had fathers like me, were destined to buy whatever Detroit put out. This truck is a composite of several S-10s( or Sonomas) I had. The 2.8 is gutless thing, my ex burned out 2 of them in my ’84 S-10 Blazer, however, I had an ’86 S-10 pickup, that 2.8 had a jillion miles. Strict maintenance was the key. This was the replacement for the LUV, and I thought this was a much better truck. 2.8 aside, it was comfy, went through the snow like all get out, dynamite heater, the extra cab is a must. I always had a hankerin’ for these, but for 5 figures, I’ll plod along in my old YJ Jeep, thank you. Unbelievable find.

Excellent example, but as alluded to above, the 4.3 is a far superior engine to the 2.8, so I’d probably hold out for a later model with the 4.3. Still, you rarely see them in this kind of shape anymore. Would be a Radwood hit!

bein a ford guy I thought the durable 3.8 would do well in it (gm 3800)?

I’m w/that said above “w/extra cab right sized”. If 4WD short bed, long bed for a st. hauler.

Desirable unit, ditch the 2.8, 4.3 in its place, this truck has another 20 years in a mild climate.

My 83 4×4 2.8 5 speed ran good. Still running original engine w/160,000 miles when I sold it. I did ruin a few front CV joints driving it through our creek crossing!

I had a 1987 S10 that I bought at an estate sale. Last year, two hours after it rolled 115,000 miles, the utility trailer I was hauling and the truck was rear ended by an uninsured woman in a Mercedes. The truck rolled four times. She must have hit me going 80 mph. I was airlifted to Ft. Worth. The police did not test her for alcohol or drugs. They took no photos. She never put on her brakes. Nor did the police even talk to me. My trailer was restored and painted Kubota orange. My truck was yellow and had a Grumman aluminum canoe on top. I guess I was not visible enough on the divided highway in front of her!?!!

I had an 85 with the 2.8. Couldn’t get out of its own way downhill with a wind. Mine used to shut off above 90 degrees so I traded it in on an 89 1500 4×4 stepside. Much more fun but an even worse lemon. The only GM I’d buy now is a 55-57 GMC or Chevy for fun. This one is sweet but needs a 4.3 or SBC to be driveable.

My 3rd vehicle was an 84 S-10 extended cab, white paint, and 2.8L, auto. It was a good truck. I owned it for about 3 years. I had to get the transmission rebuilt unfortunately just to get rid of it.

    I had an ’83 S-10 Blazer 4×4, 2bbl 2.8L, Auto…….NO POWER……..it was truly slow/weak……the 4.3L V6 or a 350 V8 would be much better

    I have a 2001 S-10 Xtreme. . Standard cab sport side black 4.3 4L60-e transmission . . Bought it new . . Little over 80 k miles now . . . I’m 81 years old so I guess you could say I am an old man driving a young man’s truck . . I wish GM had not lopped off 2 cylinders on the small block to make the 4.3 V6 . .
