430 Wildcat Powered! 1967 Buick Sport Wagon

One of my favorite things about the Buick Sport Wagon, and its GM sister the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, is all that cool curvy glass the sky roof-equipped models have on top!  As popular as station wagons had become among family travelers by this time, it’s almost like the design team had an epiphany that if there was a lot of glass to keep the rear passengers looking upward, it may help them stay busy and decrease how many times the driver is asked if we are there yet.  If you’re yearning for the days when station wagons were king and have a bunch of kids with a vacation planned this summer, this 1967 Buick Sport Wagon looks like there may be plenty of good miles left in it.  The vehicle is located in Nepean, Ontario, Canada, and can be found here on eBay with bidding currently standing at $11,700, less than the amount required to take this wagon on a family outing.

The Buick made its way up to Canada from California 5 years ago, and while we don’t know for sure that it resided in the Golden State its entire life until then, the body is stated to be good and solid.  We also don’t know whether or not it’s still wearing the original paint, but are told that the wagon has been sprayed with a satin-gloss coat of clear, so that patina should stay pretty much the same if the next owner chooses to leave things outside the way they are and use the wagon as a driver.  The seller says that the upper glass has been removed, cleaned up, then reinstalled and there are no leaks on top.  The bumpers have also been re-chromed, and all exterior trim is stated to be in good shape.

Most of the interior is said to be new, including the carpet, headliner, and OEM dash pad.  The dashboard panel is in nice shape, and the front seat is from a 1972 Buick Centurion, which is said to be very comfortable.  The original recovered front seat comes with the sale as well.  The car also had a new metal floor installed at some point, and the spare tire well was cut out, so the extra tire has to sit on the floorboard somewhere.  Several photos are provided of the underside, including this one, and from what we can see things on the south side are looking to be in good shape.  There’s a new exhaust system under there too.

One of my favorite things about this Sport Wagon is found when you lift the hood.  Gone is the 340 it came with from the factory, and in its place is a 30-over 430 V8 out of a 1969 Buick Wildcat with aluminum heads and less than 5000 miles since a rebuild.  It’s paired to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, so this wagon should have lots of get-up-and-go plus the dependability to cruise all day or all week.  The good news is the 340 that came out comes with the car, and it’s said to still be in top shape.  The seller claims that nothing needs attention and that his station wagon drives like new.  What are your thoughts on this 1967 Buick Sport Wagon?

If I were to buy this one, I would restore the spare tire well, and treat this beauty to a new, proper paint job and some TLC! GLWTA!! :-)

I agree Moparman. If the original engine is in ‘top shape’ as stated, why the switch to the 430? I would have kept the original engine in it, but that’s me. Overall a nice wagon, but I HATE fake patina. And then matt coat it with clear? I’d take it down to the bare metal and respray in the original metallic red. Of all the vista-glass Olds/Buick wagons, the `67 Buick tome is probably the best looking. GM just did it right with this model. It seems to ride high in the front, and I wonder why. New Springs? I would have to address that, myself.

Looks like they couldn’t get the 340’s AC compressor, bracketry and hoses to link up during the 430 conversion so they went without. Otherwise it’s a pretty decent looking car.

The dashboard photo seems to call for A/C. The engine room doesn’t.

Another awesome raised roof GM car. IMHO, the 1966 and 67 are the best looking cars since the 1964 debut. I’d pay close to $US10k for the car. I hope whoever bought this car enjoys it.

Sweet car, done well…needs A/C but that should be simple enough. Most 400/430/455 cars had A/C so bracketry is a dime a dozen. The 340 sucked and was anemic so, the 430 was a great choice to replace it with.
