440 + Original 383! 1968 Dodge Charger

Demand for second-generation Dodge Charger projects is still strong, with no signs of letting up anytime soon.  Even the cars in varying states of disarray seem to be attracting buyers, many with multiple bids in the last few minutes, and it’s understandable because if you’ve got the skills to restore them the finished product is one of the more desirable muscle cars of its era.  Although this 1968 Dodge Charger is a base model and kind of rough around the edges, we’ve seen considerably worse, and if you’ve been looking for a B-Body project it may be worth checking out.  The car is located in Amberg, Wisconsin, and can be seen here on eBay, with bidding having reached $17,200 and the reserve still not met.

The seller suggests that potential buyers view the car before making a bid, but thankfully, numerous photos are provided and it seems fairly straightforward what you’re getting here.  Just about every body panel needs some kind of attention or replacement, and the Charger has the typical rusty quarter panels and issues around the rear window.  The good news is the car is mostly complete and aftermarket parts are plentiful, plus the seller mentions that a rear window, filler panel, and stainless steel trim that is not seen in the pictures are all included in the sale.

This B-Body was originally a 383 car, but in its place now is a 440 that also came out of a 1968 Charger.  The engine is said to have been dyno-tuned at 388 horsepower with 500 torque, and the car is claimed to run and stop enough to load onto a trailer or drive around the yard, but I’d sure be careful trying either with no radiator present and no coolant inside the block.  The car’s original 383 is also included, which is complete with the air conditioning parts and miscellaneous items, so if you want the numbers-matching motor back in the car that’s a possibility.  No word on the condition of the automatic transmission, or the rear end.

Things inside look like they’re still mostly still intact, although they could use restoration, or at minimum a really thorough cleaning if you’re just going for a driver.  It’s probably a good thing that the carpet is missing, as we can at least see the floor, and it actually looks better on the top side than I was expecting, though maybe not great.  The trunk floor is gone and the rear frame rails are bad, but the rest of the frame is said to be in very nice shape.  What are your thoughts on this 1968 Dodge Charger?

In 1996, I sold my show winning 68 Charger RT with orginal 440 4spd, for $12,500. Shortly before the Barret Jackson craze. I was becoming a father, a husband and a home owner.
The trade off was worth every penny, even at todays value.

Got to be the contrarian. No woman is more important than any cool ride. If she loves you she knows old cars are part of what makes you who you are. Unless you have several Chargers. In which case, let one go.

Why put a nice painted engine in an engine bay without at least cleaning the bay up first?

Looks like nice motor in the wrong place, what was the plan here? Bass ackwards resto plan, way too much dinero depending on legit info on motor. The body looks totally roached from the pix, and wait until you take a pic hammer go tapping around to find weldable steel.
