450 Horsepower 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454

There are two letters and one number that when said in the sequence gets everyone’s attention. If you are a Chevrolet enthusiast, your heartbeat jumps with excitement. If you are a Ford or Mopar enthusiast, the LS6 designation gets respect as one of the most powerful engines that GM ever put in a car. This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is equipped with a replacement block after the original engine was blown in the 1970s. The car is located in Cave Creek, Arizona, and is listed here on eBay. With 4 days remaining in the auction, the Chevelle has received 29 bids with the current high bid at $29,500.

The eBay ad doesn’t talk much about the interior but the pictures indicate that it is in pretty good shape. The black dash, bucket seats, console, carpet, and door panels look nice with very little wear. A large tach is mounted on the front of the console. The black interior matches the black vinyl top that will need to be replaced.

The seller states that the car was built at the GM Arlington, Texas plant, and was apparently a test car and spent part of its life in Canada. As mentioned earlier, the original LS6 454 cubic inch V8 engine was blown and replaced in the 1970’s with a GM replacement block. The LS6 was rated at 450 horsepower from the factory. The massive big block is backed by a replacement Turbo 400 transmission. The car was originally equipped with a 4.10 posi rear end and it was replaced by a 3.73 geared unit in the 1980’s. The seller states that he has the build sheet to prove the car is authentic.

The Code 78B black cherry is faded and worn. As noted, the black vinyl top is coming apart. The seller states that the body is straight and rust-free. The pictures of the underside of the car look very nice with the original red primer still evident on the floor pans. I have no idea what the reserve is but I would think the bids will continue to go up?

Pretty much the holy grail in a Chevelle. Love the color combination. While it’s not numbers matching it’s still a piece of muscle car history and 100% badass in my book.

The seller specifically states he DOES NOT have the build sheet. The seller is talking in circles, he give some convoluted story about Canada and being some sort of test vehicle, then explain away every piece of the original drivetrain.

This car has been featured in this site before, no one bought it then, nor is anyone likely to buy it now.

Thanks Steve R, I thought it looked familiar and that the seller had an odd story.

    PCV valve needs a destination.
Did any of these LS6’s get an air pump?

Good catch! I have always seen them with the air pump. Probably got lost during the engine swap. Also back in the day pollution controls were not well accepted and promptly removed at the first sign of a drivability issue. How many remember draining the balls from all those clogged GM cats.

Remember when real ones were bringing $100,000 plus at BJ about 20 years ago? That was serious money back then.

I know I’ve seen this here recently with the Shelby parked next to it. And here it is again.
That’s okay, it’s always nice to see one of these here, like the black cherry paint and black interior. That 454 is an animal.
As for the final price,, I can’t afford it anyways so I’ll just enjoy any and all stories about the big dude LS6. In action of course.

Looks great as it sits ~ except for the raggedy vinyl top. Think I would just replace the vinyl top, clean it, and drive it!

I have to say. Unless you got wealthy between then and now, the guys who used to have these when they were young and paid $1,000 for them as a 10 year old, hundred thousand mile car that most people didn’t want anymore, can’t afford to relive those days with these kind of prices.

My 1970 LS6 Chevelle that I bought new had the smog. The LS6 El Camino I now have still has it. Price seems okay but not too much higher.

Without a build sheet or original stamped block there is no way to prove this is an LS6 or even an original SS. 1970 chevelle’s are popular and it probably is an SS but there is no way to proved it and I’m sure the seller knows this.

Too many unsubstantiated claims. Worth as much as any nonrusty V8 Chevelle from 1970.

By the way, I made a 454 LS6 comment a while ago. My brother’s Chevelle was phantom blue with white stripes. Yes it did have a anti smog pump which was promptly removed and headers were added. A LS7 could be crate bought from GM. The engine in the car was 4400 dollars extra. A good amount of dough back then. I know these facts because I lived it.

I’m not buying the Canadian test car BS for one second they made those cars in Oshawa Ontario Canada so why would they ship a 1970 from Texas to Canada when they have the same products. The cars were built very well in Oshawa And I currently own 3 that came off that line . Things could get a little confused at times so I’ve been told by line workers that if your car was order with certain options and if the bins did not have the proper stock you got what they had next best to it or whatever worked .
