4WD Pioneer: 1987 AMC Eagle Wagon

The seller considers this super clean 1987 AMC Eagle Wagon to be his own personal barn find, as it’s been in his barn for the last several years sitting unused. The Eagle Wagon was a pioneer in the truest sense of the word, combing four-wheel drive with a lifted wagon body long before the Subaru Outback was even a clay model. The combination of higher ride height, a beefy inline-six, and proven four-wheel-drive made the Eagle wagon a revelation when it was introduced, and it maintains a loyal following today. This example appears to survive in slightly-better-than-driver-condition and is listed with a suggested opening bid of $5,000 here on eBay and no reserve.

Now, really, it has a $5,000 reserve, which is what the seller is telling us with a listing like this. Still, it may very well be worth it given the body appears to be in excellent condition and because it looks to haven’t been messed with during its years in captivity This is always one of the bigger concerns of a vehicle that’s been in storage for a few years or more, as it seems like some half-assed repair work always tends to happen, or the owner pillages it for parts for another vehicle. In the case of this seller, he indicates he’s got quite a few AMCs strewn about, so I’m guessing the desire to hack up a good one was fairly low. The bumper, with its weird curve, appears to be in good shape and the taillight lenses are uncracked.

The interior is a real highlight, and this is where the AMC looks as good as the seller indicates in the description. The seller notes he bought the AMC from a woman years ago, who claimed it came from Massachusetts before residing in Annapolis, Maryland. The seller then drove it home to Tennesee and claims it still runs and drives nicely despite being laid up for the last few years. The carpeting has been replaced but it sounds like everything else is original, which makes the seat upholstery condition even more impressive. Even the fake wood trim presents surprisingly well – and that fake applique almost never looks good in an older vehicle.

The hearty inline-six is known for its death-defying levels of durability, so it’s of little surprise that the seller’s wagon still runs and drives without much fussing after its stint in storage. The seller reports most everything works, including 4WD, power windows, power door locks, front and rear wipers and washer jets, rear window defroster, adjustable mirrors, and gas gauge, and he also reports there are no major oil leaks.   The A/C did work when it went into storage but no longer blows cool, and the radio only pulls in AM stations. In addition, the cruise control is inoperable. Still, with original paint and a minty interior, these are minor concerns on a vehicle of this vintage. Winter’s coming – would you drive this survivor wagon in the snow?

If my 2001 Town & Country would ever die I’d love to have one of these. Won’t be around long at $5K.

With 9 hours left, it’s still at $5200. What’s up with THAT?

The Eagle was definitely a car before it’s time. People in the snow belt loved these. Many were held onto unit they disinterested from the road salt. Like the International Travelall I commented about people who owned Eagles were fiercely loyal to the brand.

In my youngin days , i had a few of these as daily commuters
Living in snow country ; these things were great and i wasn’t gentle on them
Went trailing and managed to follow most of my friends that had BIGGER and BETTER rides so they said
The last one was a black loaded station wagon that never failed me but a new job and promotion with supplied vehicle had me sell it
Ihave been an AWD lover ever since
But i simply prefer a newer ride to these but this is an awesome one

This looks like a very nice Eagle with “limited” power accessories. Nice buy if it stays under $7,000. I purchased an 87 Eagle (beige over gold) this summer…base trim, air, stereo, crank windows, plaid fabric.

AMC was always creative/resourceful for lack of funds. 1970 Hornet sportabout wagon plus some Jeep stuff and behold an Eagle wagon!

Before Subaru 4WD wagons, there was the American Motors Eagle wagon. AMC STILL doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

I started to consider an AMC when they were closing down. They were sellin, where I live, for 0% interest. I wish I would have at least gone and looked at one.

AMC Eagle 4WD cars were genius- but Subaru best them to the punch by over a decade with a 4WD wagon introduced in 1974 for the ‘75 model year.
