56 Years Young: 1962 International Harvester Scout

As I get ready to add another year onto my age in a week, I’m reminded how much I like vehicles from 1962 since that’s when I was also put together by union workers in a factory somewhere. I must have been made on a Monday. This good-looking “rust free” 1962 International Harvester Scout pickup can be found here on eBay with no reserve and a current bid price of $2,650 and there are only two days left on the auction! It’s located in Richmond, California – let’s check it out.

This Scout 80 isn’t perfect, you can see some dings and that dent in the leading edge of the LF fender. The seller says that “there’s no major rust issues” and that it is “very solid not bad for it’s age great for restoration or repaint it and drive it!” Their entire listing is in all-caps and without a lot of punctuation so it’s a little hard to decipher, but the photos speak for themselves.

It has been repainted at some point and I’m not sure if this one will get restored or will the next owner just rebuild the mechanical systems and use it as it looks now? I love the Cab-Top pickup configuration of these early Scouts, they’re perfect for hauling a couple of small motorcycles around. The tailgate folds down almost like a ramp but you’ll want to use a real ramp instead of jumping into the back with your dirt bike.

I thought that roll-up windows started in 1963 but maybe not? I-H made about 100,000 of these Model 80 Scouts between 1961 and 1965 with four different top configurations. I’m assuming that these olive-green seats have been reupholstered and the seller has included a few detail photos showing the rust on the floors.

This engine should be I-H’s 152 cubic-inch slant-four, half of a 304 V8, and it was good for 93 hp. This one reportedly runs good but has an exhaust leak and the original mechanical fuel pump is kaput so they put in an electric fuel pump. Apparently, it’s been sitting for a while so they say it needs a tune-up, brakes, tires… the usual. Hagerty is at $5,500 for a #4 fair condition example. What is this one worth?

Several Bidders … SOLD Sunday evening December 16 for $4,050. Looks like a terrific work truck. I think the buyer got a pretty darn good deal.

I’m also a 1962 vintage about to celebrate a birthday this month. It’s interesting how we tend to gravitate toward the cars of our youth. Part of that is nostalgia of course, but another factor is most new cars are about as interesting as a Bic lighter and just as disposable. One thing I have learned is very rusty cars are not worth the effort. Whoever picked up this Scout is a lucky fellow.
