7,800 Original Miles: 1976 Pontiac Trans Am

This 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am comes with extensive documentation that supports its one-family ownership history and 7,800 original miles. The Trans Am certainly appears from the outside to be a survivor worthy of the $34,995 OBO asking price as listed here on eBay, which also details how the Trans Am left the showroom with a few additional tweaks courtesy of the dealer.

The interior is impressively clean, with un-torn bucket seats, nicely preserved door panels, excellent carpets (reproduction?), along with a center console and clean dash pad. The lack of sun fading on the bucket seats tells you a lot about how carefully the Trans Am was used and stored, and the condition in the cabin leaves little doubt about the mileage claim.

I’m assuming those are original graphics, which look to be holding up nicely. The iconic bird graphic on the hood is also nicely preserved, ensuring no one ever mistakes it for a Camaro. The red paint is deep and lustrous, also presumed to be original. The back seat shows next to zero signs of use, as you’d expect for a low mileage muscle car like this.

The seller’s listing notes that the original selling dealer made several tweaks before the first owner took delivery. This included the installation of headers and a Craig radio in the cabin, along with BodyGuard undercoating. The underhood condition further validates the impressively low mileage, and the seller’s listing indicates they are open to best offers and interesting trades.

Tweaks…..is that the new word for non-original car stuff ? Just hard to fake an original motor appearance….this one’s had fresh paint – always have to ask why ?

Would like to look at it in person to see what else isn’t “original”. Makes no sense to repaint an original engine in a 7,800 mile car.

Only one engine picture ? ? ?, No undercarriage pics . Not buying the mileage

Had a 77 and a 79 new back in the day. Don’t doubt the low miles, but as per the above comments, some things have been freshened. Engine (new paint?). The fender flares pit easily, and the welting changes hue over time. Doesn’t help that the ad pics are not real clear. Try enlarging and see what I mean. No underbody shots or pics of the front spoiler, another item that could look a little rough and not fit real well even when new.

All I see is a base model Trans Am. With a 400, instead of 455. And a automatic trans instead of a 4spd. Rally wheels intead of Snowflake or also called Honeycomb wheels. Again all I see is a very low mileage, base Trans Am for $35,000.00? I’ll pass, I know I could find a better car to suit my needs, cause this isn’t it. Sorry, and the color isn’t my must have either. Best of luck with the sale.

These are my favorite year for the T/As. As it did have it’s own nose on the car. What I mean is. Every other nose style was on two, or more years. The 70 to 73. The 74, 75. 77, 78, and the 79 to 81s. It ran true for the next generations as well. These were one of a kind. Yet I’d pass on this one. To many things don’t add up for me. I don’t care about the 400. I do care the car was repainted. No fear quarter panel image. They rusted there hard. I’ll pass. Maybe a $7 to $10,000.00 price maybe.

I think many of you guys are too harsh with this TransAm – I mean, all together this seems to be a very nice example. As vintage car guys we cannot expect to pick the ideal options or color when we’re out to buy a 43 year old car!

OK, its color may not be the sharpest but considering how many 70s Firebirds came in some tan hue I know many of you dislike, this red can’t be that bad? The absence of those options many modern day car guys deem ‘mandatory'(AC, 4spd, 455), the overall unmolested appearance and the fact that the headers and radio were installed by the dealer make me suspect the chap buying this Firebird in ’76 was a mature, sensible guy who wanted to treat himself with a present(mid-life crisis?). Probably someone who wanted the appearance of a sportscar but had no intention to race it at every stoplight.

It is in no way a 35k car but if it’s as good as it seems I think next owner will get a really nice example of the species

No A/C why? No wonder it was never driven.

They didn’t even take the valve covers off to paint them. Paint all over below them on the exhaust. Always liked these cars and style. Asking price is so far over.
