96k Original Miles: 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger

This 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger looks like it is a clean and solid car that would suit the person who is seeling a fairly straightforward project vehicle. It is free of any rust issues, and the work required is not going to break the bank. It is located in Elk Grove, California, and is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding on the Dart has reached a paltry $1,525, and the reserve has been met.

The Dart is finished in Light Gold, with a black vinyl top. The top was replaced back in 2014, but the paint is said to be original. It is showing its age a little bit, but it remains quite presentable. The car has been garaged for its entire life, so that has certainly assisted in this area. As far as rust is concerned, there is nothing to fret about here. This Dart is about as clean as they come, so there is nothing that would be classed as urgent. It appears as though the car is ready to be driven and enjoyed.

The interior of the Dart is also said to be original, and it certainly appears to be quite serviceable. The steering wheel isn’t original, and I would probably be inclined to replace it. On the “to do” list, I would place a new cover for the front seat, which is quite faded. I’d probably also add carpet for the same reason, while the dash pad is badly cracked and should be replaced. The rear parcel tray has been cut to fit aftermarket speakers, but I can’t see any sign of a stereo, as the original radio is still fitted into the dash. The rest of it looks really good, with only a few minor details to attend to.

With a 318ci engine, TorqueFlite transmission, power steering, and power brakes, the Dart is quite nicely equipped. The engine bay looks clean, but I have noticed a few spots of surface corrosion that I would be inclined to fix at some point before they manage to deteriorate any further. The owner also claims that the car has covered a genuine 96,300 miles, but doesn’t mention any documentation that he might hold to verify this. He also doesn’t mention how well the car runs and drives, although according to the listing, it appears that he is quite approachable and willing to answer any questions about the car.

If the Dart Swinger passes muster on the mechanical front, then it would represent a potentially very easy restoration project. It looks like a repaint and the replacement of a few interior trim items will have the car back close to its best. Because none of these items would be classed as urgent, it is a car that could be driven and enjoyed throughout the Summer months, and the restoration work could be tackled during Winter. Sounds like a good plan to me.

Sweet Swinger! My old girlfriend Sue had one when we were in high school. Same drivetrain as this one. And it went hella fast with Van Halen blasting on the aftermarket cassette me player!

I have the same dash in my car.

My speedo bounces from 20 KPH to 80 KPH all the time.

Nice car, I’d bet the reserve is close to $10,000. Not sure if I’d be interested if it reached that price.

I miss the days when this at best was a $500 car (adjusted for inflation) Watch out for rusted torsion bar rests, a soft spot of these, otherwise the 318 will make this sing, a truly nice little car. Keep the 2 bbl, you don’t need more, though a healthy dual exhaust will be nice. Even has air, but good luck finding Freon these days without a connection. My local auto parts store used to sell cans of it by the case for like 50 cents a can in bulk. Back then if your hoses leaked, no one cared, it was cheap and easy to recharge it instead of an expensive fix. I know, I know, the ozone layer and all of that, but last I heard the ozone hole is fixed, so let me buy some cheap Freon to recharge my old car why don’t ya!

We just sold a 30lb cylinder of new (as opposed to recycled) R-12, $1250. Better investment than gold.

Can you tell me what the rules are for selling R-12 Freon?

Cheap 12oz cans of Freon is not uncommon at garage sales.

Two years ago I took my car to my buddys shop to add R-12. He called one of his venders and with a straight face he asked whats the market on R-12 today? I was kind of stunned. I went back later to have the job done. Ice cold air on the way home! The next morning, no A/C. He did not check for freon leaks.

Being in the Air condition business for 40 years I can say there is no laws on selling R-12. It’s just not being produced anymore cause it’s a CFC!! Which is responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer!! The one rule is you can’t vent it to the atmosphere!! If you get caught doing so there are big fines and possibly jail time!! They also provide rewards to people who turn you in or have proof on video of you doing so!!

Some boat is missing it’s steering wheel. Return this one back to him and install a factory correct one in this car.
