64k Miles: 1987 Mazda B2600 4×4

It’s rare to see a standard cab pickup these days, it seems like most of them are four-door commuter vehicles now. Even the extra-cab type of pickup seems to have gone by the wayside. Another unusual attribute about this 1987 Mazda B2600 4×4 is its small size. Remember when they made small pickups? This one can be found here on craigslist (SOLD) just southeast of Denver, Colorado. The seller, Chad R, is asking $4,500.

I get it, I know why people like full-sized pickups and I know why they like having extra room behind the front seat. I don’t always agree with either of those things but I get why most people want a big truck with more inside room, which is exactly why the previous owner sold it to Chad. Mazda actually made an extended cab B-series pickup, the Mazda Cab Plus, and also a dual-cab four-door pickup for several markets.

This example has just under 64,000 miles on it according to the seller, and it looks great. I don’t really see too many glaring faults in this truck, especially on the outside. The 4×4 version of the B2600 was made for the 1986 and 1987 model years. There is one small rust spot mentioned, and the underside looks solid.

The seat cover doesn’t give me hope that the seats are in good shape but those can be fixed if they need it. This is a 5-speed manual truck so it’ll be fun to drive. Not fast, but fun and most of us know that a vehicle doesn’t have to be fast to be fun to drive. The headliner is downright luxurious, at least compared to my 1980 Dodge (Mitsubishi) D-50 Sport pickup headliner.

Speaking of Mitsubishi, this is the same engine that’s in my 1980 Dodge D-50 Sport pickup, Mitsubishi’s 4G54 2.6L inline-four with just under 100 hp. The seller mentions a slow leak from the valve cover and possibly the oil pan, both should be easy fixes. It runs great and this looks like a fantastic example of a pretty rare 1987 4×4 Mazda pickup. Have any of you owned one?

Bullet proof little trucks — I’ve had both extended cab and short cab. Enjoyed the extra room in the extended cab. Rust got both of them, engines were still churning like new — miss them!

This is my idea of what a good truck is. The only thing missing from this truck would be a turbo diesel engine.

I always wondered – with no headrests & the rear glass so close to the back of one’s head in a 2 door non crew cab – in a collision,
if your head hits that glass …. ?!
Hard to believe the feds were more concerned with air pollution in the mid 60s & less with safety – in trucks – 20 years later!!!

They still make compact pickups; they just aren’t made or imported here anymore, no thanks our absurd CAFE regulatory scheme:

Yeah, you used to see the ISIS folks driving them around like the Rat Patrol on the news.

This thing is awesome and unfortunately is something that will never be made again. If current automakers were smart they’d make a modern equivalent, but then again I suppose there wouldn’t be enough fat and or arrogant asses out there to fill those compact truck seats to make it worth it financially. The current “compact” trucks are as big as the old school full size trucks. SMH. Old man style rant over.

Those are awesome trucks, was second owner of my uncle’s 1987 B2600, the best suspension on a pickup truck at the moment of their release, I would love to find me another one them.

It’s getting harder to find these older trucks, these trucks are great, any truck that the average person can work on, mechanic shops and government hates that because they lose money if you work on your own vehicle
